High number of tourists overwhelm Kalangala district

The over 80 Islands of Ssesse Islands have been overwhelmed by the high number of tourists flocking the Island district this festive season. Kalangala has been receiving high numbers of tourists since December 20.

The Uganda Wildlife Education Centre(UWEC) has unveiled plans to erect a statue and construct a museum in honor of the country’s oldest chimpanzee, Zakayo at their premises.

Zakayo, the country’s oldest chimpanzee died at the age of 54 in 2018 after succumbing to chronic gastroenteritis.

Speaking at the first-ever Zakayo legacy day on Friday, UWEC, Executive Director, James Musinguzi said the museum will be a token of appreciation for the role played by the chimpanzee in increasing the number of tourists in the country.

“Zakayo was an icon at UWEC and a great ambassador to wild animals out there in the field. He brought in a lot of tourists to UWEC but also Uganda at large. It is, therefore, befitting for us to recognize the efforts and contribution to Uganda’s conservation,” Musinguzi said.

Entebbe moves to preserve historical tourism sites

Entebbe municipality is pooling resources to mark, protect and preserve tourism sites within its jurisdiction.

Entebbe, Uganda’s first administrative town, holds several historical sites, parks and gardens. They include the first seat of the Ugandan Parliament, Muzinga square and Children’s Park, all close to the statehouse, the Botanical Gardens and the freedom tree.

The other sites are Kigungu Missionary Shrine where the first missionaries Brother Amans Delmas and Simeone Loudel first touched the ground after circumnavigating Lake Victoria, and “Entebbe za Mugula”, a heritage site of the Mamba clan after which Entebbe city was named. Entebbe also hosts the country’s wildlife education centre and the country’s first International Airport.
