Safari Alert, Things To Do In South Sudan.

It’s the newest country in the world and one that many people haven’t even heard of. Those who have, usually associate it with the military conflict that has been tearing up the region for decades.

But behind all of that, lies a country of ancient cultural rituals, a myriad of colorful local tribes and raw natural beauty.
It is still the most challenging destination for the intrepid traveler.

However, in the last few years, a handful of travel agencies have been organizing tours to South Sudan, making its natural and cultural wonders accessible to travelers worldwide.

You can check out our South Sudan itinerary here and below you will find our recommendations for the top 7 things to do in South Sudan Like The Mundari Cattle Camp.

Visit a Mundari village
The Mundari are an indigenous Nilotic ethnic group, known for their facial scarring and traditional rituals. As part of the traditional initiation rites, boys must live three months with a village elder away from the community.

They are then scarred with a V mark on their foreheads to complete their transition into adulthood. This is a distinctive feature of their look.

The Mundari are pastoralists, whose culture, beliefs, and everyday life are centered on their livestock consisting of horned Ankole-Watusi cattle.

Spending time in one of their villages provides a glimpse into an unusual and distinctive way of life, very different from the one most of us have.

Uganda Gorilla Safari

If your dream is mountain gorilla trekking, Uganda is the place to go. Rwanda is currently the only other country in which these gentle giants can be encountered on a trek, and Ugandan permits are roughly half the price charged over the border.

Apart from gorilla trekking, there are lots of other things to do in Uganda. The country is home to many primates and Kibale National Park offers amazing chimpanzee trekking and monkey viewing.

Kidepo Valley, Queen Elizabeth, and Murchison Falls National Parks are great for game drives in a savannah environment with plenty of lion, buffalo, and elephant, as well as a range of antelope species.

The country is particularly scenic and has a lot to offer to people with a keen interest in natural history and those who enjoy active holidays.

Uganda Gorilla Trekking Tours

Few wildlife encounters are as exciting as coming eye to eye with the largest and most charismatic of the great apes, the gorilla.

It is difficult to pinpoint what makes this experience so special. It may be that these gentle giants are so closely related to us (the difference in our nuclear DNA is only 1.6%).

Mountain gorillas are naturally restricted to a niche area of forested highlands. Unfortunately, this already-small habitat is shrinking due to overpopulation.

The income derived from tourism is crucial to secure their future. By booking a gorilla trekking safari, you have the opportunity to contribute to the fight for their survival.

Where to see Mountain Gorillas In Africa?

You follow a narrow hiking trail through the lushness of a tropical rainforest, wiping sweat from your eyes and feeling grateful for your hiking gaiters.

Suddenly, a tracker returns from scouting ahead and excitedly halts your group – it’s time to move forward, slowly, with nothing but your camera and the thrill of anticipation. Grinning, your guide turns and whispers the words you’ve been longing to hear:

There are only about 900 mountain gorillas left on Earth and trekking into their native forests is the only way to see these critically endangered gorillas, as they cannot survive in captivity.

Trekking for gorillas in Africa’s emerald rainforests and observing the everyday interactions of these vulnerable primates is arguably one of life’s greatest privileges.

Follow gorilla families as they go about their daily lives. Observe how a mother tenderly feeds her young while being cognisant of the cautious stare from a 200kg (440lbs) silverback as he keeps a protective eye over his troop.

Locking eyes with a distant relative is a profound experience that makes spending time with gorillas in Africa an unsurpassable wildlife encounter.

But where are the best places to see gorillas in the wild? Based on our first-hand gorilla trekking experiences in the continent’s most far-flung destinations, here is the platform to guide you on where to travel for a gorilla trip.

The Ngorongoro Crater is a breathtakingly beautiful setting and the best place in East Africa to see the Big Five.

It is a great way to start your African safari adventure. However, as one of the world’s most astonishing and renowned natural wonders, the Ngorongoro Crater gets busy and sometimes very busy.

Due to the crowds, we recommend a two-night stay only here, then moving on to the Serengeti for a quieter, more private safari experience.

Any Northern Tanzania Safaris should ideally include a visit to Ngorongoro Crater:

it is one of the world’s most beautiful natural wildlife safari sites and an exceptional place to interact with people from the Maasai tribe.

The Ngorongoro Crater and surrounding highlands form one of Africa’s most beautiful regions.

Volcanic craters form stunning backdrops to some of the most fertile and richest grazing grounds in Africa.

The most famous such crater is without question Ngorongoro, the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera and home to the highest density of big game in Africa.

Ngorongoro is justifiably one of the continent’s most famous safari destinations.

Tanzania Safari -
Tanzania is one of Africa’s top safari destinations. The wildlife viewing is out of this world and big cats are especially easy to see.

All members of the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo) can be found in various Tanzanian parks and reserves, and all five are present in the Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti National Park.

Almost 40% of the country is protected and set aside for conservation, which means that it’s easy to go on a Tanzania safari for 2 full weeks and drive from park to park while rarely leaving the bush.

5 Day 4Night Tanzania Great Migration.
Based on the rooftop of Africa, this is where our lighthouse shines from and where the adventure begins.

The benchmark and highlight of the journey stems from Uhuru Peak and stretches to the endless plains of the Serengeti.

Our 5-Day Tanzania safari offers wildlife galore that is both exceptional and interesting. On this short but intense trip, you will experience the excitement of cultural tours coupled with an African wildlife safari in the most spectacular parks in Tanzania.

Ethiopia is one of the most scenic countries in Africa. As the country has been associated with drought and famine for many years, you might expect a desert wasteland.

Instead, Ethiopia is mostly lush, mountainous, and incredibly fertile. While you won’t find many of the usual safari suspects, there is plenty of animal diversity here. Wildlife viewing is different in Ethiopia.

It is mostly about finding endemic creatures unique to Ethiopia in a spectacular setting. Culturally the country is equally special.

You might end up dancing with tribal people in the Omo Valley or praying with highlanders in the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela.

Expect the unexpected in Ethiopia, one of the continent’s most exciting emerging travel destinations.

Widely regarded as the birthplace of safari, Kenya is undoubtedly one of Africa’s premier safari destinations. The country boasts unbeatable wildlife regions like the Masai Mara and Amboseli, as well as jaw-droppingly gorgeous beaches along its Indian Ocean coastline.
From seeing the Big 5 on daily game drives to witnessing the spectacle of the Wildebeest Migration from a hot-air balloon, Kenya delivers the kind of holiday experiences that dreams are made of. But what if you’re in search of things to do in Kenya other than the traditional safari experiences? Look no further!

From fly fishing on the country’s highest mountain to exploring an island that’s been the center of Swahili culture for over 700 years, here are the best things to do in Kenya apart from going on a traditional safari…Come and Conquer Mount Kenya!

Standing at just over 3,800 meters (17,000 feet) tall, Mount Kenya is the highest mountain in the country and the second highest in Africa, after Kilimanjaro. The massif comprises three main peaks: Batian and Nelion (the two highest and highly technical climbs) and Point Lenana (no technical climbing skills required but still challenging).

Most climbers go up and down a combination of three main routes – Naro Moru, Sirimon, and Chogoria – which generally take about five days to complete. Trekking through breathtaking mountain scenery of glaciers, lakes, mineral springs, and alpine forests is one of the best things to do in Kenya if you’re an active traveler.

There are various campsites around the mountain for the more adventurous, and several lodges that offer other activities like guided nature walks, horse riding tours, and trout fishing in Kenya. The mountain is home to several streams and lakes that harbor rainbow trout of legendary sizes – some of the best locations for fly fishing in Kenya.

The Chalibi Desert, Kenya!!
East of the remote Lake Turkana is the Chalbi Desert, a 100,000 square kilometer area (38,610 square miles) that is aptly named in the native language of the Gabra people as “salty and bare.” Like many of the areas in the Northern Frontier, the desert was once part of an extensive lake, as evidenced by the basin that fills with shallow water during heavy rains and fossilized remains of snail shells and fish vertebrae.

When you journey into the Chalbi Desert, prepare yourself for an eerie landscape edged by rocky lava flows, cracked earth, and a sandy mixture of white salt and clay which your guide carefully drives through. Even in this barren and desolate location, you may see a shadow emerge in the distance, as ostriches, Grevy’s zebras, oryx, and other adapted animals are often observed in the desert. Amazingly, spotted hyenas have been seen too.

The Chalbi Desert, though, does have a secret. On the northern edge is a gorgeous area of oases with groves of palm trees that attract sand grouse and other birds including vulturine guinea fowls. The oases are also used by the Gabra people as water sources for their camels. Another contrasting landscape in the desert is the Huri Hills and Mount Forole to the north, at the Kenya-Ethiopia border, where temperatures are slightly lower and the wilderness is much greener, giving you a private escape from the desert heat while enjoying expansive views of the hottest location in Kenya.

The Chalbi Desert is a harsh and very remote environment; therefore, we recommend that Viutravel guests tour the desert by a helicopter or arrive at the airstrip at Sibiloi, and then utilize a prearranged safari vehicle available to you from a Lake Turkana accommodation.

No trip to Africa is complete without a game drive. Tourists can scratch the itch to go on safari just two-and-a-half hours away from Kigali at Akagera National Park.

Managed by the African Parks organization, Akagera, and its biodiversity have incredibly recovered from near decimation after the Rwandan genocide. The 1,140-square-kilometer expanse (one of Central Africa’s largest protected wetlands) now boasts all Big Five animals, along with an abundance of birds and antelope.

You’ll need a lot of luck to spot a lion or rhino–conservationists are still working on boosting their populations, and for now, there aren’t that many at Akagera. However, you’ll have no trouble spotting zebras, hippos, Nile crocodiles, elephants, and giraffes on a self-drive safari.

The landscape itself is just as spectacular as the animals that live here. You’ll see the environment make a glorious shift from savannah plains to wetlands and lakes.

Hire one of the helpful guides at the park visitor center. They have insider’s knowledge of where to find the animals

And it is very possible to combine this safari in Rwanda with either, Uganda, DR Congo or Burundi.
