HARTEBEEST (Alcelaphus buselaphus) DESCRIPTION The hartebeest group is something of a taxonomist's nightmare but the simplest line is followed within six distinct races which can be more or less separated on distribution, horn structure and coloration. All races have very similar body build, tails and habitat requirements. They're of medium size and high shouldered and low-rumped, which gives them a rather awkward and clumsy appearance, but they are nimble and fast runners. Both sexes carry horns but those of the cows are more slender. DISTRIBUTION Has a wide range with a number of races being isolated. Western (major) extends through West Africa from Senegal to Western Chad. The Lelwel (lelwel) extends from the limits of the last race over much of the northern Central Africa and into western reaches of East Africa, where the rare Jackson's (jaksoni) occurs. In the picture is the rare Jackson's The Tora(tora) only occurs in limited areas of adjoining Sudan and Ethiopia. We're Jungle Memories Uganda let us tail up your African Safari with ease!

Throughout history, the African lion (Panthera leo) has represented courage and strength. The cat is easily recognized both by its roar and the male's mane. Lions, which live in groups called prides, are the most social cats. The size of a pride depends on food availability, but a typical group includes three males, a dozen females, and their cubs.

The Southern Red-Bishop (Euplectes orix).

Is a small, dumpy sparrow-like weaver. The breeding male is a mix of velvety vermilion and black; the narrow black forecrown is diagnostic. The female and non-breeding male are nondescript, with a short tail and strong buff eyebrow, and are difficult to tell apart from other bishops. Happy gorilla year 2021! The new year brings another gorilla baby Bwindi Impenetrable forest fold! On January 4th, Nkuringo family’s Adult Female Nderema gave birth to a new baby bringing the family size to 12 members. The new birth marks Nderema's second infant following her first birth in 2018 that saw her baby sadly not make it due to environmental extremes within its first 15 days of birth.

Giraffes can eat as much as 29 kilograms of acacia leaves and twigs daily. Herds of three or more giraffes spend hours browsing in acacia thickets, greedily gobbling up as much of the delicious foliage as they can. They don’t have it all their own way however…

Over time, the acacia tree has developed several clever defence mechanisms to prevent giraffes from munching on them unabated. As I’m sure most travelers to Africa can attest to (after painfully stepping on a fair few), the acacia does not mess about when it comes to thorns. Taking their name from the Greek word for thorns – akis– some species grow thorns that are as long as 8-10cm, and sharp as a knife. The striking leopard is one of the hardest large species to observe in Uganda, thanks to its nocturnal, solitary behavior and well-camouflaged coat.

Their survival is partly due to their adaptability to warm and cold climates and ability to climb trees while carrying heavy prey - keeping it safe from other predators such as lions and hyenas.

Uganda has an extraordinary natural beauty and significant untapped tourism potential.

From the highest mountain range in Africa — the Mountains of the Moon — to the mighty Nile, Uganda is filled with natural beauty.

So, it’s only natural that there is a variety of wildlife and flora found within the country’s boundaries. More than half of the world’s endangered mountain gorillas, over 1,000 bird species, along with seven out of the 18 plant kingdoms, and more than 340 mammal species find sanctuary in Uganda.

Queen Elizabeth National Park in Uganda is often said to have the world's only tree climbing lions. The same is said about Manyara National Park in Tanzania. But the truth is, the tree climbing lions aren't a special type or breed of lions, basically any lion can climb a tree, it more depends on the presence of suitable trees to climb. In fact, I would like to claim that you are much more likely to see a lion in a tree in Murchison falls National Park, than in any other place, especially during and just after the rainy seasons. This is of course partly because of the sheer number of lions in Murchison falls National Park, making it easier to find lions at all. The only lions that really almost never climb trees, are large, adult males, they are just too big and heavy! We're Jungle Memories Uganda choose us for your fascinating African safaris!
