Today I visited The Royal Drummers of Burundi, commonly known in recordings as The Drummers of Burundi or as The Master Drummers of Burundi, is a percussion ensemble originally from Burundi. Their performances are a part of ceremonies such as births, funerals, and coronations of mwami (Kings). Drums (called karyenda) are sacred in Burundi, and represent the mwami, fertility and regeneration. The Royal Drummers use drums made from hollowed tree trunks covered with animal skins (the cows hides & skin). In addition to the central drum, called Inkiranya, there are Amashako drums which provide a continuous beat, and Ibishikiso drums, which follow the rhythm established by the Inkiranya.

THE PEARL OF AFRICA

Like its East African safari neighbours, Uganda is home to the Big Five, but its our closest cousins that have put the nation on the international tourism map... The mountain gorillas of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and the chimpanzees of Kibale National Park are this country's greatest assets and top wildlife bucket lists the world over.

Uganda is also home to the source of the Nile, at Jinja on the shores of Lake Victoria. This mighty river is forced through a narrow 21 feet-wide gorge on its way to Lake Albert, forming the breathtaking Murchison Falls.

The river is every inch the tourism drawcard that Uganda's great apes are, and visitors can enjoy a variety of activities along the Nile, from white water rafting to just sitting and taking in the majesty of this iconic river in its early stages.

A land of contrasts, Uganda's Rwenzori Mountains are simply breathtaking, forming a natural border between the country and neighbouring Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. These are the legendary "Mountains of the Moon" with their peaks forming a dramatic backcloth to some of Uganda's most beautiful landscapes.

It's on these mountain slopes that coffee is grown - the country's number one export!

Birders also love Uganda, thanks to the more than 1000 species recorded across the country's various habitats. Endemic species include the purple-breasted sunbird and dwarf honeyguide, as well as the incredible shoebill, which can be found in Queen Elizabeth National Park, as well as a variety of other destinations.

Scientists have just discovered that female American crocodiles can produce offspring without males—a phenomenon known as facultative parthenogenesis, or “virgin birth."

This ability, called parthenogenesis, appears to be an ancient trait shared between crocodilians, birds, and dinosaurs. Which means part of Jurassic Park may actually have been able to happen.

HISTORY !

The hotel opened on October 8, 1967 as the Apolo Hotel. The hotel's opening was attended by its namesake, Prime Minister Apollo Milton Obote. When Obote was overthrown in a military coup by Idi Amin in 1971, the hotel was renamed the Kampala International Hotel. Following the overthrow of Amin by Tanzanian forces, who made the hotel their headquarters, and the Uganda National Liberation Army in 1979, and the return to power of Obote in 1980, the hotel reverted to the Apolo Hotel name. The National Resistance Movement government, which came into power in 1986, liberalized the economy. In 1987, it was extensively refurbished and then renamed when it became a Sheraton Hotels franchise. A fence separating the hotel compound from the neighbouring Jubilee Park was removed and the park was renamed Sheraton Hotel Kampala.
