Murchison falls National park is part of the country’s largest protected area, the Murchison Fall conservation, a 5000sqkm expanse formed together with the contiguous Karuma and Bugungu wildlife reserves.
It is situated at the northern tip of the Albertine Rift Valley with an altitudinal range from 619m at the delta on Lake Albert to 1.292 m at Rabongo hill.
The longest river in the world – the Nile traverses this wilderness, dividing grasslands roamed by big game on the Northern bank from bush and forest inhabited by birds and primates on the southern side.
However, the centerpiece of this amazing wildlife destination is the Nile waters encounters a narrow cleft in the Rift Valley Escarpment, and then it is transformed into a froth of thunderous white water to form the greatest falls in the world. The scenic view of these Murchison Falls and the roaring sounds created by the waters are really stunning, making the park truly a must see destination while on your wildlife safari in Uganda!!
The vegetation is characterized by savannah, riverine forest and woodland.
WHAT TO SEE
As one of Uganda’s oldest conservation places, a wide variety of animal and bird species are making their habitat in here. There are over 80 mammal species, four of the big five besides rhinos and others respectively including giraffes, elephants, lions, buffaloes, giraffes, leopards, spotted hyenas, Uganda kobs, bushbuck, waterbuck, warthogs, oribi and jackal. The list of birds counts to more than 450 species.
WHAT TO DO
Game Drives around Buligi Game track on the Northern banks allows you see and photograph a wide range of animals in the Nile Valley that also include the lions and probably leopards at dusk.
The boat ride upstream from Paraa presents an astonishing display of wildlife and culminates with the memorable frontal view of the falls as well as water loving animals along the banks such as hippos, crocs, elephants and buffaloes that come to drink water on the Nile.
