A note to self:
On this wonderful day and in the days henceforth, do not doubt your ability to do anything or be anything. Remember to always be humble no matter how big your profile is. Remain true to yourself and never let go of honesty. Remember to always be kind to yourself and learn from both your mistakes and those of others.
God has been gracious, He has been merciful. I have grown and matured under his wings. I am grateful for the far God has brought me. It has been amazing grace from day one.
Happy birthday to me.

BodaBoda riders are young vibrant Ugandans who just want to work

stop arresting our Boda’s, we are hungry and just want to work, that’s it.

Even though entrepreneurs naturally have built their companies from the ground up, most of them at least had a good education. Our guest on today’s show really started from nothing and co-founded a company that transformed the lives of thousands. ...

Did you know that more than 1.92 Million Ugandans in Kampala alone survive on the Boda Boda!?

A Simple Note, to the President of the Republic of Uganda!

Mr. President,

We appreciate your commitment towards fighting the COVID 19 pandemic, but by ignoring the work done by Boda Bodas, you are affecting more 1.92 Million Ugandans in Kampala alone. The number could be 10 times bigger if we looked at the whole country.

Let me reveal a few facts about this sector called Boda Boda, Mr. President. Majority Ugandans use public transport as their main form of transport, according to Uganda Bureau of Statistics. Data available from Kampala Capital City Authority already indicates that Kampala alone has more than 120,000 motorcycles majority of which are engaged in commercial activities – boda bada.

Just doing some logic to the figures here,

Going by the numbers i have shared above, this means that the Boda Boda industry directly employs 120,000 riders in Kampala, if each of these riders has a family including one wife and at least 3 children, that means there are 480,000 direct dependants on the Boda Boda industry. If on average, each Boda Boda carries 10 people in a day, (remember most of us park out cars and run around town on that two -wheeled thing), this means that the Boda Boda industry enables 1.2 Million of us in just a single day. Behind every Motorcycle, is someone who invested in it expecting some revenue at the end of every day and these could be 120,000 investors in Kampala alone.

So, in just a single day, 1.92 Million Ugandans hold a stake in the Boda Boda industry in Kampala alone.

If i were you, i would allow Boda Bodas to carry at least one passenger, and ensure we enforce all the other measures that are applicable to the rest of the transport sector. If anything, the passenger on the Boda Boda faces in the back of the rider. Just talking from experience because the Boda Boda is our thing on the streets of Kampala.

For the record, I don't own a Motorcycle in Kampala or anywhere in Uganda, and if anyone has this information, let them bring it out. I am however a stakeholder because i use them quite often. I don't remember when i last maneuvered through the Traffic in Kampala as i chase small business deals in the Central Business District. We all use them and for many people outside Uganda, Kampala is a city that moves on "two wheels". I am also concerned because i know so many young people who are employed in the Boda Boda industry, these guys have dependants and this is my point.

On the issue of safety and Boda Bodas spreading the virus, i think Boda Bodas may even be safer than Taxis and Buses. If the Boda rider wears a helment, and the passenger wears the Mask, there are higher chances that the Boda Boda could be the safest among all public Transport means.

This is Rapa Thomson Ricky, founder of SafeBoda Uganda who is currently undertaking the Swedish Institute Management Programme 2018.

As a major stakeholder and contributor to Uganda’s transport sector, Ricky hopes to use this program to learn how he can remain relevant as a business and also harness sustainable innovations to transport people. We interviewed him recently and this is what he shared with us:

What makes you passionate about the work that you do?

I am a former boda boda driver and this profession is what has made me who I am today. As a former boda boda driver, I witnessed and lost a very good friend in a boda related accident and it’s against this background that SafeBoda was founded. I made it a personal mission to find ways to make the industry safer and more professional. I want to see my fellow Boda Drivers observe the road safety rules and regulations and we do this by empowering them through our different trainings and I also want to see my fellow sisters and brothers commute safely from point A to point B. At SafeBoda, we strongly believe that the future of urban transportation is about safety. Safety was and is still the heart of our organisation.

What are your expectations?

Under this SIMP Africa 2018 program, I have already met young entrepreneurs from different countries across Africa with great minds. I look forward to engaging the participants, mentors and moderators on the topic of sustainability, financial inclusion and Safe mobility for all.

is one of the best countries on the globe that has managed to do business sustainably and consistently, therefore I look forward to learning from these experiences and success stories and bring this knowledge back to implement in Uganda as well.

What is your key message to emerging entrepreneurs in Uganda?

is a great place with nice people and lots of unexploited opportunities in the different sectors from transport, real estate, clean energy, to health among others. We are a unique country with a very young population and very high unemployment rate. As young people, we suffer the consequences of unemployment, therefore, it’s our time to step up and do something for our communities and the country at large. We no longer have the right to say there are no jobs when we can innovate and create solutions to these problems.
