Did you know that more than 1.92 Million Ugandans in Kampala alone survive on the Boda Boda!?
A Simple Note, to the President of the Republic of Uganda!
Mr. President,
We appreciate your commitment towards fighting the COVID 19 pandemic, but by ignoring the work done by Boda Bodas, you are affecting more 1.92 Million Ugandans in Kampala alone. The number could be 10 times bigger if we looked at the whole country.
Let me reveal a few facts about this sector called Boda Boda, Mr. President. Majority Ugandans use public transport as their main form of transport, according to Uganda Bureau of Statistics. Data available from Kampala Capital City Authority already indicates that Kampala alone has more than 120,000 motorcycles majority of which are engaged in commercial activities – boda bada.
Just doing some logic to the figures here,
Going by the numbers i have shared above, this means that the Boda Boda industry directly employs 120,000 riders in Kampala, if each of these riders has a family including one wife and at least 3 children, that means there are 480,000 direct dependants on the Boda Boda industry. If on average, each Boda Boda carries 10 people in a day, (remember most of us park out cars and run around town on that two -wheeled thing), this means that the Boda Boda industry enables 1.2 Million of us in just a single day. Behind every Motorcycle, is someone who invested in it expecting some revenue at the end of every day and these could be 120,000 investors in Kampala alone.
So, in just a single day, 1.92 Million Ugandans hold a stake in the Boda Boda industry in Kampala alone.
If i were you, i would allow Boda Bodas to carry at least one passenger, and ensure we enforce all the other measures that are applicable to the rest of the transport sector. If anything, the passenger on the Boda Boda faces in the back of the rider. Just talking from experience because the Boda Boda is our thing on the streets of Kampala.
For the record, I don't own a Motorcycle in Kampala or anywhere in Uganda, and if anyone has this information, let them bring it out. I am however a stakeholder because i use them quite often. I don't remember when i last maneuvered through the Traffic in Kampala as i chase small business deals in the Central Business District. We all use them and for many people outside Uganda, Kampala is a city that moves on "two wheels". I am also concerned because i know so many young people who are employed in the Boda Boda industry, these guys have dependants and this is my point.
On the issue of safety and Boda Bodas spreading the virus, i think Boda Bodas may even be safer than Taxis and Buses. If the Boda rider wears a helment, and the passenger wears the Mask, there are higher chances that the Boda Boda could be the safest among all public Transport means.
