I'm a retired Naval officer now teaching at the Naval War College in Newport, RI. I bought The Old Town House while I was still on active duty, thinking I would retire there. But my association with the Navy has continued! So now I share the house with those who enjoy Albuquerque as much as I do. I make it out to the house several times a year to enjoy the snapping blue sky, and of course, some green chile! I am also fortunate enough to have an excellent team in Albuquerque helping keep everything squared away and on track.
The house was built circa 1902. It is a terron adobe, meaning it is made of big earthen slabs, instead of small adobe bricks. As I understand it, the layout of the house, oriented around a front salon or parlor, is in keeping with the Territorial style, common to the area. The floors are original. The house received a modern systems update in 2007. From what I understand from the previous owners, the big open area behind the back yard was, early on, a common grazing area for small animals in the neighborhood. Another story I’ve heard is that a scientist who was up for a Nobel prize lived in the house at one time. I will have to do more research to verify that, but it’s fun to think about! Old adobes sleep wonderfully, and early on Sunday mornings, you can here the church bells in the plaza.
