Today I went to GSA (Gay-Straight Alliance) club today and, since Coming Out Day is coming up, people were sharing their stories of coming out to their families about their identities. Most of the stories were negative— children were called disgusting by their parents, one person was almost thrown out of their house, another was told by her mother that she hoped she would die before she saw her daughter marry a woman.

It was ignorance that made these parents act this way, they did not understand that there is nothing bad or wrong with being gay or bisexual or transgender, or mentally or physically disabled, for that matter. It is time for the ignorance to end and for us to simply love each other.

This is the day I offer ideas for how to be thoughtful and kind to other people.

If you see your friend looking down or even simply low on energy, try offering them a hug. Hugs reduce stress, cause your brain to produce oxytocin (a chemical that reduces blood pressure and is associated with happiness,) and can communicate feelings like “I’m here for you” and “I care about your happiness.”

Today is the Harvest Moon, the full moon closest to the Autumn Equinox. It lights the way for farmers harvesting in the early evening.

What have you sown this year? Have you planted seeds that grew and bore fruit? Have you sown seeds of friendship that have blossomed into relationships with people you love and depend on?

Consider taking this weekend to cook something with seasonal fruits and veggies, from a produce market or your own backyard. Make sure to share some with the people in your life who you love.

Do you ever wake up and say, "oh f---, it's morning!" All the time, right? The first sip of coffee and I apologize to Spirit, and thank Spirit that I have risen again today. I sometimes think Spirit laughs at my foibles all the time. Spirit knows I don't mean it. In fact, Spirit knows already every thought, every feeling, every minuscule aspect of me.
Knowing this often makes me wonder why there is so much emphasis on saying things the "right" way, or doing rituals, "the exact" way, etc. My experience of Spirit is that it knows me inside and out, it knows what I mean even when I might say it "wrong".
So, why then do we bother with rituals and affirmations? It's because we have forgotten our oneness with the Universe. We think our little lives and temporary problems are all there is. The rituals and affirmations remind us that we are part of and one with a much bigger existence. They aren't to "manipulate God into giving us what we want." Instead the rituals and affirmations are to help us focus, help us remember who we are, and keep us from the despair of thinking we are alone and doing this on our own.

I have been asked many times to do healing either over the phone or long distance. Many shamanic practitioners do that. My preference has always been to be in the same room, looking into their eyes, one on one.

I still prefer that for soul retrievals and extractions.
Some of the most interesting healing sessions have been when my spirit allies tell me that they have a message for my client, and then ask my client if they have any questions. Sometimes we have gone to some really interesting places and very deep. Sometimes I've been directed to past lives, or to spirits who are bothering my clients who just need help crossing over, etc.

This has led me to now offer shamanic sessions over the phone. I still don't want to do soul retrievals or extractions over the phone, but rather I will go to my allies for messages or to answer questions and we'll see where it leads.

When you are on your path and you can't see what's around the bend, that's the most important time to keep going. Most folks get scared or discouraged when they can't see what's next and give up. Women in labor often ask for drugs just before the baby is ready to pop out. It's at this point when all the hard work has been done and you have to have the faith that the next step will be supported.

This past Fall, I published my first book. I almost gave up when it was finished, edited and no publisher would pick it up. I even had endorsements from 3 other published authors -- well known ones. I looked into self-publishing but didn't have the money to do it. So, I started a "go-fund-me" campaign, and made the money through my generous friends and family. Now I have a published book. I'm so glad I didn't give up. I get feedback all the time from folks who have read it, saying it meant so much to them. One student even quoted from my book on her Instagram page!

Practicing Shamanism can help give you the faith you need to take your next step with whatever your heart is longing for. It's an ancient practice that teaches us about direct revelation from Spirit - no one on a soapbox or pulpit giving you directions, just Spirit.
