Cover art for JADPRO on uveal melanoma. Including sketches - from some rough concept thumbnails to final drawings (including the one our new adopted dog tried to eat. Oops. Could’ve happened to anybody.) it’s a rare cancer with a poor prognosis but some hopeful results with a new drug. If you have pale eyes, this is another good reason to get your eyes checked on the regular…

Part of a series done for a really lovely Spanish doctor 🇪🇸who needed some images for publication. And because I love to see sketches, I’m including those too. You can see my initial rough sketch and then the final sketch (and where my dog tried to eat this bit of homework too) I did a variant in a monochrome and kept pathology in bright color but I think I liked it more than he did. Nevermind. I can share it with you guys.

Whealth]

I paint more stuff than just bone, muscle, disease and surgeries - and if anyone is curious about, give me a follow at

It’s currently a lot of birds, it was a lot of beetles. It’s going to be printmaking for a couple of weeks because I’m going back to art school for a short intensive 😬 (which is exciting and nerve wracking all at once) And then it’ll be science-y things for our local science museum.

Hopefully I’ll see you there
Cheers
Alex

Cross section of endometrium for pt suffering with acute abnormal uterine bleeding. Not uncommon.

Seeing red? We’re used to it. What do we do is the question.

This is a blastocyst. It is a stage of development that occurs about 5 to 6 days after conception. It consists of two parts - an inner cell mass (ICM) and an outer ball of cells called the trophoblast. The ICM will potentially become an embryo and the trophoblast develops into the chorion and amnion. The placenta develops from embryonic cells.

Why do I say ‘potentially’ develops into an embryo? Well, if the blastocyst doesn’t implant into the lining of the uterus…nothing happens. It will never develop past this stage. Never. It is a ball of cells.

Why would the blastocyst not implant? Well two main reasons. First - genetically, something went wrong really early. Second - the uterine lining is not at the right place in its cycle to receive it.

How often does that happen? Well, about 40 to 60% of the time, but some studies even put that number as high as 80%. (Is it even accurate to say you were pregnant if there was no implantation?)

So how is it accurate to say life starts at conception? Because I think it gets really murky when you try to assign a starting point to a cycle. And we are going to lose some birth control rights with that one. We surely are. These are questions for better minds than mine, but goddammit- these are also questions for individual people to ask themselves in the privacy of their own home.

And here’s the same painting from yesterday’s post but from the back side. It was a long day. This wrapped all the way around and up into Bobby’s face!

Starting on the right hand side at the top - there’s the trapezius and moving down to the latissimus dorsi. On the left hand side you can see the serratus posterior inferior and the erector spinae group (moving laterally to medially there are three muscles - the iliocostalis thoracis, the longissimus thoracis and the spinalis thoracis)

End of work in progress series
This was the final submission for JADPRO - Journal of the Advanced Practitioner in Oncology

Do I love it? No - I never do. I have little moments I like. I like the red swipe of color near the virus 🦠 I like the bottom right shadow edge. Like most other projects by the time I finish, I am *done* looking at it (thank you - visual fatigue, not hate)

Close up of the scanned drawing. The shadow was drawn on a piece of trace with registration marks and scanned separately. It was all brought into Photoshop from there.

So next come the scribbles, the thumbnails, the desperate lunging at whiffs of an idea

This particular article was about the long term effects of covid on cancer patients. And the effects of cancer treatments on the efficacy of vaccines. For nurse practitioners. And this is a cover image, so it’s editorial, not didactic. The thought of casting a long shadow popped into my head

Don’t know if I call this a work in progress because I finished it already (doesn’t seem fair when you know how the story ends) but I thought I’d back up and share the progress.

How it starts…sometimes with a doodle, sometimes lining up oranges and a flashlight up on the counter. Who knows what the day will bring? Any guesses?

I really need to start posting things again…

Sorry I’ve been a bad illustrator. Well no. I’ve been a good illustrator, I just haven’t been sharing. Trying to turn a new page, set some goals and get into better social media habits (like posting instead of scrolling…)

Here’s Katie and Ariel with some arm and lower back anatomy for Whealth. I’ve got a backlog of body painting to show, lots of surgery sketches and some editorial work in progress series to post as well. And if anyone is interested in the stuff I paint in my off time - I’m migrating all of that over to

05/30/2022

I’m migrating everything non-medical over to a new Instagram account

What’s that going to be? Well, more personal stuff. Dogs, birbs, bugs, doodles, my gardens

Am I a naturalist? No, I’m not. Yes, I studied anatomy/surgery/etc in school. Yes, I spend the work week researching the heck outta stuff. This is just for fun. My husband got a bird app - Merlin - that tells you what’s singing outside and because I’m middle aged and obsessed with birds (it’s a thing - just wait) I’ve started painting them. A lot of them. Like…a lot.

So if you like birds, bugs, flowers, small silly dogs and whatnots - come follow me at and I’m going to really try and post more anatomy here

Cheers!

This is an ectopic pregnancy. It happens when a blastocyst implants outside of the uterus. About 95% of the time this will happen in the fallopian tubes. What is not shown in this image are the arteries that run alongside the fallopian tube. If not caught, it can rupture both the tube and the artery that supplies it. A ruptured ectopic pregnancy is a true medical emergency.

There is only one cure - termination. It is either treated medically or surgically, but it is a termination. The embryo cannot be transplanted.

Ectopic pregnancy occurs at a rate of about 20 cases per 1000 and it is a leading cause of maternal mortality in the first trimester and accounts for 10-15% of all maternal deaths. The number of ectopic pregnancies has risen dramatically in the past few decades. Survival has increased from the 70’s but maternal death associated with this is still higher in women of color.

Though I am new to the love of motorcycles, I have long loved costumes and good causes. And here we are with The Distinguished Gentleman's Ride combining all three. How do you not say yes?

https://gfolk.me/AlexandraWebber

Money raised from this event helps fund cutting-edge research into prostate cancer, and mental health and su***de prevention programs. Prostate cancer is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer in men. 3 of every 4 su***des are men. 510,000 men die from su***de globally every year. That's one every minute. These funds are invested by the DGR's partner, Movember, which is the world’s largest men’s health organisation (if you see mustaches in November - that's those guys)

https://gfolk.me/AlexandraWebber

I'm trying to hit 500$ The ride is in three weeks. If I could ask my friends and loved ones to donate and share this post. $20 from 25 people will get us there. $10 from 50 also works. In other words, every little bit will help. Follow the link above to my fundraising page.

Thank you for your gift 🎩🏍🖤❤️
