Major climate events NOAA is closely monitoring:
Persisting and intensifying drought in parts of the West and Great Plains: Despite recent drought relief in the Central and Southern Plains, long-term drought conditions will continue to impact water resources and agriculture. Long-term and short-term drought conditions in the West will also increase wildfire risk.

More information is available from the U.S. Drought Monitor.

El Niño still probable later this year: According to NOAA's Climate Prediction Center, there is a 65 percent chance, down from last month, of at least a weak El Niño developing this upcoming autumn or winter.

El Niño conditions could have impacts on temperature and precipitation patterns across the U.S. More information is available from the Climate Prediction Center.

North American Monsoon: In the Southwest, southerly, moist winds associated with the seasonal monsoon could increase the chances of precipitation during the remainder of the summer. Heavy precipitation can lead to localized flash flooding as well as more widespread short-term drought relief.

: great job New Jersey! The State of New Jersey passed a law that bans ivory sales. New Jersey is a known hub for the highly illegal ivory trade. The law also includes Rhino horns. Killing animals for their horns and tusks is repugnant. Liv Safe supports applied conservation and this is a great example of it. We hope other states will follow New Jersey’s example.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission confirms an outbreak of Red Tide 13 miles offshore of Madeira Beach in Pinellas County. Red Tide (K. brevis) is a naturally occurring type of algae. The existence of Red Tide has been documented for hundreds of years in the Gulf of Mexico. This particular outbreak has resulted in the deaths of thousands of fish. Sea Turtles and Bull Sharks have also been affected and found dead or dying. The swath is approximately 80 miles long and 50 miles wide.

8/5 2:00 pm central: FWC tells Liv Safe that this is the largest bloom since 2006 and that the swath is generally moving South with at-depth movement Southeast

USGS study: Nesting Gulf sea turtles feed in waters filled with threats

DAVIE — Nesting loggerhead sea turtles in the northern Gulf of Mexico feed among areas that were oiled by the 2010 Deepwater Horizon spill and where human activities occur, several of which are known to pose threats to sea turtles, a new U.S Geological study showed.

The feeding areas for 10 turtles overlapped with an area that experienced surface oiling during the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill. These sites, and others, also overlapped with areas trawled by commercial fishing operations and used for oil and gas extraction.

The study, which is the largest to date on Northern Gulf loggerheads, examined 59 nesting females, which scientists believe could be 15 percent of the breeding females in the Northern Gulf of Mexico—a small and declining sub-population of loggerheads that is federally classified as threatened.

“With such a large sample of the nesting females, we’re finally getting the big picture of when, where and how females that nest in the northern Gulf of Mexico rely on off-shore waters to survive. This information is critical for halting and reversing their declines,” said USGS research ecologist Kristen Hart, the lead author of the study.

The study began in the wake of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill as a means to better understand how sea turtles used habitat in the Northern Gulf of Mexico by analyzing the movements of turtles tagged between 2010 and 2013.

All of the turtles tracked in the study remained in the Gulf of Mexico to feed, and a third remained in the northern part of the Gulf. This differs from reports in other parts of the world, where some loggerheads have been shown to migrate across ocean basins after nesting. http://www.usgs.gov/newsroom/article.asp?ID=3954

ALERT: Red tide causing large fish kill in northeast Gulf of Mexicohe Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) on Tuesday confirmed a large-scale offshore fish kill in the northeast Gulf of Mexico. Citizens have reported observations of thousands of dead and dying bottom-dwelling reef fish, including grouper, hogfish, white grunt, triggerfish and snapper, as well as sea turtles and crabs, to the FWC's Fish Kill Hotline. Water quality is poor in the region with several reports of black water.

On July 23, FWC Law Enforcement took scientists to collect fish, water samples and water quality data from six locations offshore of Hernando County. Sample analysis confirmed a bloom of the Florida red tide organism, Karenia brevis. Blooms of Karenia brevis in the Gulf of Mexico are naturally occurring and have been documented since the 1700s.

Satellite images from the Optical Oceanography Lab at the University of South Florida revealed an extensive surface bloom approximately 80 miles long and up to 50 miles wide in waters 40 to 90 miles offshore between Dixie and Pasco counties. Short-term forecasts of bloom movement by the Center for Prediction of Red Tides do not predict considerable movement of the bloom patch in upcoming days. To report fish kills to the FWC, contact the Fish Kill Hotline at 800-636-0511. For updated red tide status reports, to track blooms or to learn more about red tide visit http://www.myfwc.com/RedTide

The Fed declared about 300 of Florida’s 685 miles of beach a critical habitat for loggerhead turtles. Loggerhead Turtles lay eggs along many Florida beaches starting around May of each year. Pinellas County beaches were oddly excluded from the declaration. Pinellas County, which includes Saint Petersburg and Clearwater beaches, are known breeding grounds for loggerhead turtles.
