NEWS RELEASE: Cape Hatteras National Seashore urges visitors to avoid the beach near an unoccupied house collapse in Rodanthe

Cape Hatteras National Seashore (Seashore) is urging its visitors to avoid the beach and stay out of the water near the north end of Rodanthe and potentially for miles to the south, due to an early morning collapse of an unoccupied house at 23001 G A Kohler Court in Rodanthe, North Carolina. Additionally, the Seashore is monitoring an adjacent house that sustained damages because of the house collapse. Dangerous debris may be present on the beach and in the water to the north and south of the collapse site, which will likely lead to temporary beach closures for public safety.

A debris removal contractor, hired by the property owner, is expected to begin cleanup work today. Debris removal activities may also be conducted by National Park Service staff.

The collapse of the house at 23001 G A Kohler Court is the eighth house collapse on Seashore beaches over the past four years, and the third this year. No personal injuries were reported in connection with any of the collapses. Learn more about the threatened oceanfront structures that border the Seashore at: http://go.nps.gov/cahatos.

Photos taken at the collapse site and along the beach will be uploaded to the Seashore’s Flickr page (https://www.flickr.com/photos/capehatterasnps/albums/72177720320480249) in the coming hours.

ATTENTION
Cape Hatteras National Seashore is continuing to monitor and enforce the roughly half mile closure at and to the south of the Buxton Formerly Used Defense Site. It is important for visitors stay out of the closed area to avoid sometimes strong petroleum odors.

See map for the current beach closure associated with the petroleum contaminated former military site in Buxton. Barricades are in place at the entrance to each of the parking lots on the map.

NEWS RELEASE - Unoccupied house collapses on Cape Hatteras National Seashore beach in Rodanthe

Following the collapse of an unoccupied beach house this evening, Cape Hatteras National Seashore (Seashore) and the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge strongly urges all visitors to avoid the beaches and stay out of the water around all areas of the beaches and surf in Rodanthe. Additionally, all public entry to the beach from the northern boundary of Rodanthe up to the northern end of the Jug Handle Bridge is closed. Many other homes appear to have sustained damages in the Rodanthe area. Dangerous debris may be present on the beach and in the water for more than a dozen miles.

Prevailing currents appear to be rapidly transporting home debris to the north; however, if the wave swell and winds shift over the coming days, debris may also impact visitor safety in the villages of Waves and Salvo.

The Seashore is in communications with the property owner. A debris removal contractor has not been obtained by the owner at this time. Debris removal activities may be conducted by National Park Service staff if other efforts to remove debris do not occur. The Seashore does not expect significant debris removal efforts to occur until after the elevated sea conditions subside early next week.

This evening’s collapse of the house at 23214 Corbina Drive is the seventh house collapse on Seashore beaches over the past four years. No personal injuries were reported in connection with any of the collapses. Learn more about the threatened oceanfront structures that border the Seashore at: http://go.nps.gov/cahatos.

Briefing for Potential Tropical Cyclone Four. Impacts may occur as early as Tuesday or Wednesday. Our first briefing is emphasizing that heavy rain, flooding and rip currents are the main threats as of now. In addition, our impacts may last a few days especially if the potential storm slows down or even stalls near our area.

Do NOT let your guard down based on an intensity forecast of a Tropical Storm. Check back for updates as this may change AND, regardless of storm intensity, heavy rain is possible.

Remember you can get the latest information from our local tropical page: https://www.weather.gov/mhx/tropical

Extra big fish report just sent to us by Luke!: “It takes an awesome team of great friends to successfully hook, fight, land, and release a really big fish. Luke, Alex, Jason, and Dan did that today! Great Hammerheads are really cool, beautiful animals that demand the utmost respect. We worked quickly to unhook the fish and keep it swimming, with plenty of people around to take videos, and photos. Our plan was to catch something big today, and we did it!" Luke
