Following the original interpretation of the art (loosely ITF), Hopkins TKD seeks to enrich its students through understanding of the mental, physical, and philosophical aspects of this Korean martial art. We focus on both the traditional practice of martial arts, and optional competitions for any of our members to take part it, in both forms and sparring. Our Grandmaster is Tae Sun Kang, who is b

ased in New York City. His website can be seen here: http://www.tkangtkd.com

Classes are available to all JHU students and staff and no prior experience is necessary. If you are interested in joining us, please e-mail us or check out our website for more information!

This year we bid a fond farewell to Emily Grace ! Emily Grace started during the pandemic when we were holding virtual classes and continued on for her entire Hopkins career, eventually earning a high green belt.

Emily Grace majored in General Engineering and East Asian studies (she was the only student who actually knew Korean). Besides Taekwondo, Emily Grace also participated in Design, Build, Fly, Gospel Choir, and Interfaith Council. Now that she has graduated, she’s heading out to Colorado.

Best of luck, Emily Grace!

Congratulations to the students for passing their belt test!

Scenes from the black belt test. To receive their black belts, our students travel to in New York City to test in front of our Grandmaster. It’s the culmination of years of training and work.

We will have a few videos from the test as well. Stay tuned.

Believe it or not, these are all authentic Taekwondo moves.

We’ve been told that we should start a TikTok account. What would it be called? Hopkins Tikwondo?

Every day is leg day at Hopkins TKD! 🦵

Every class we practice our riding stances. We’ve recently gotten up to the point where we can hold them for over 2 minutes! Here you can see Ernest and Emily Grace demonstrating the exercise. As well as the aftermath.

(We didn’t make the sign. We just thought it was a good opportunity)

This year, we bid a fond farewell to Sophie Skanchy who graduated and is moving on to greater things. Sophie joined as a freshman and already had a black belt in karate. This sometimes led to confusion among other students when she could perform advanced Taekwondo techniques while wearing a white belt (Ernest had to continually remind people that Sophie is a “black belt in disguise”). Contrary to popular rumor, Sophie is not actually capable of doing a thousand push ups. She’s pretty good at high kicks though.

Sophie eventually became President of the Hopkins Taekwondo Club and found herself unexpectedly leading us through a global pandemic. Ever conscientious, she made sure to teach all the incoming officers how to do the job and made sure the club would be in good hands before she leaves.

Sophie majored in Biophysics at Hopkins and is going to start a PhD in Molecular Biology at Princeton in the Fall. We wish her all the best!

For some reason, we kept having situations where the boards didn’t appear to have broken until we looked closer and they came apart. Kind of like when a sword sides through something in anime, come to think of it.

Here’s Al doing his board break.

05/18/2022

Ever ambitious, Lam tried to break three boards with a roundhouse kick for her test. She ended up breaking two.

Janelle finishing her board break.

05/11/2022

It may look like Lam unleashed her Hulk strength to rip the board apart, but Pamela really did break this board on her own.

Second time was the charm for Ruchik.

05/08/2022

It’s Catherine’s senior year, and she got to break a board before graduation. Best of luck in your future endeavors!

Al didn’t feel the need to match Lam’s four board break. He decided to “only” do three.

Count ‘em! Lam broke four boards for her belt test!

04/19/2022

To be clear, we do not encourage our students to actually kick each other. But sometimes pretending to do it helps break boards. Here’s Kiran demonstrating.
