Antarctica. I cannot tell a lie. It was cold. Sometimes undeniably uncomfortable. The Drake Passage was every bit as challenging as advertised. But at each opportunity I suited up and went out in it without hesitation. I have paddled the waters of Half Moon Bay and chipped ice off my outerwear while standing on the shores of Deception Island waiting for a Zodiac to get me back to my ship after exploring an abandoned research station. Seen the incredible bird life at the Falkland Islands. And it wasn’t all inclement weather. We had beautiful sunny days, too. I went at the latest part of the summer season; a period noted for higher than normal marine life activity. Saw a group of 4 or 5 humpback whales participate in bubble net feeding. No words for that. I guess my point is, go. Take your children. Bring your parents. Get off the ship if you are physically able to do so. Things are changing. Go see what it’s all about.
