Ruth's Roots is a community garden that began as a project of the Hancock County Juvenile Drug Court. The garden exposes local youth and community members to agriculture and nature while offering plenty of space for personal growth and expression. Seasonally, we plant vegetables, fruits, and herbs. We have chickens, rabbits, worms, and honeybees. We donate most of our eggs to another local nonprof

it. Our honey is available for a donation. In the garden, you will also find a free little library and a blessings box. Please feel free to grab a book, sit under a tree, and read for awhile. Our Blessings Box operates under the motto: Take what you need. Leave what you can. We have had visitors from all over the United States, Canada, Russia, Japan, Mexico, and the Bahamas (those are only the visitors we know about!). Help us spread the word about Ruth's Roots, our little garden by the Bay. Ruth's Roots is a 501(c)(3) and is 100% funded by private donations and grants. If you would like to donate to our community garden, please make checks payable to the Hancock Community Development Foundation with "Ruth's Roots" in the memo line. Checks can be mailed to the Hancock County Chamber of Commerce at 100 S. Beach Blvd, Bay St. Louis, MS 39520. Ruth's Roots would not be possible without the donation of the land by Mr. Jim Thompson. We are so grateful for his generosity. Visit Ruth's Roots at 130 Court Street, Bay St. Louis, MS 39520 and make sure to grab a brochure. Don't forget to check in, take pictures, and tag us! I hope everyone enjoyed the Witch’s Walk and got to visit the vendors at the garden. Those witches did a great job decorating!

Speaking of decorating, Kerry Maloney and crew are decorating the garden again! But we need your help! If you have any extra Christmas decorations or lights or are willing to buy us some, we would greatly appreciate it! (There is a really cool countdown to Christmas sign at Sam’s that I couldn’t fit in my car, but if anyone else can….💗). We also need help decorating. November 16 is our decorating day. So many kids and families love to see the garden decorated. Please come help! Message us with any donations and we can provide drop off locations or can pick them up if they are close. We could also use Lowe’s or Walmart gift cards to help us purchase what we need. Thank you! 💗

Happy Sunday afternoon! Thankfully we were spared the full wrath of Hurricane Francine. The blessings box has been running super low, so I would greatly appreciate y’all donating. It is an awesome way to serve the most vulnerable of our community. I just left from feeding the animals and I’m about to tackle those beds so we can get fall seedling in. While I was there I crammed every free little library with books, cookbooks, games, a kindle, pokeman cards, needlepoint, Knick knacks and more!! Someone had left an entire tray of homemade cookies and they smelled amazing, so if you need a sweet (and who doesn’t) stop by! Thank you for supporting the garden!

Good afternoon!! Thank you to the folks that continue to drop off food, books and movies. Our community appreciates you! There is always something great happening in the Bay and this weekend is no different. We have St. Rose de Lima Blues and Barbeque Fest at the depo and Open Art Studios where three of our super talented artists open their studios for you to check out their magic and how they do what they do. Luckily, you will have time to attend both!

Of course, if you find yourself in the Bay, swing by Ruth’s Roots and share some love!

Good afternoon!!! Thanks to Soil Sisters for fixing up the bed next to the fish pond. It had gotten quite unruly, but it’s looking beautiful now. We looking forward to partnering with them on other projects in the future.

We have new fish in the pond and they are doing great. We also have our second bunch of tadpoles in the pond and baby frogs everywhere! Check them out.

We have four free little libraries and they get used in the summer more than any other time. If you have any books you no longer need or that your kids have outgrown, please consider dropping them off at the garden. Additionally, we love when visitors bring a canned good for the blessings box when they come by. Hope everyone is having great summer!

Check out the garden! Mississippi Power painted all of the salad tables and they look amazing. They also donated all of the supplies. The students from Lisa Curry’s class at Holy Trinity also visited the garden to help. They planted our back bed full of sunflower seeds. I can’t wait for them to make their debut. Monday morning, to celebrate Earth Day, Mississippi Power will return and fill the salad tables with soil and all kinds of plants. We are blessed to have great community partners like Mississippi Power. Come check all of the magic out!

Thank you to Mississippi Power for showing up in force to freshen up the garden! They will be here today painting until noon if you want to help or just stop by to thank them. They are returning this Monday on Earth Day to fill the salad tables with veggies, herbs and flowers from 8:30-12:30 and could use help then as well.

We could always use food for the blessings box, books for the free little libraries and dvd’s for the blockbuster box. Thank you for being an awesome community!

Good afternoon!!! Earth is approaching and will be here Monday, April 22. Mississippi Power has chosen the garden to do their Earth Day project and we are so lucky!! They will be at the garden this Friday, April 19 to paint the new salad tables and help us bring some beautiful colors back to the garden from 9:00-12:00. They will be back on Monday, April 22 from 8:30-noon to fill the beds with veggies, herbs and flowers! Got home school kids or just willing to help? They would love more volunteers on both days. Wear your clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty and leave your mark on Ruth’s Roots!

Mark your calendar for March 9th and make sure you are in Old Town Bay St. Louis. Souper Mud Fest is an amazing event and it supports the blessing’s box at Ruth’s Roots! If you’ve never been, our amazing local artists make beautiful pottery bowls which are $25. The line starts early for the bowls! The fabulous Old Town Merchants make a variety of delicious soups and you get to stroll about and shop, all while enjoying soup. Don’t worry, you don’t use your beautiful pottery bowl, you can put that in your car. Each merchant has bowls or cups with spoons for their soup. It’s going to be a great time and it’s always beautiful weather!

Maybe you are sad that football season is over. But every cloud has a silver lining and our silver lining is that Derick Hall is back from Seattle for a bit and he and his mother, Stacy Gooden-Crandle filled up the blessing box this weekend. 💗 Thank you to everyone that keeps the box full. Y’all are a blessing.

Today we are thankful for the students at Saint Stanislaus. The school is celebrating the Feast of Saint Stanislaus by giving back to the community. You will see Stanislaus students all over the county volunteering their time. At Ruth’s Roots, the students filled the new salad tables with soil and topped off the old salad tables so we can get our plants in. They also organized the free little libraries to make them more user friendly. Thank you! Saint Stanislaus High School Kristen Tusa
