A Moment in Chem 3 Lab- Students expanded on an earlier lab, and designed their own kinetic lab looking at the effect of different solvents on a Sn1 reaction between t-butyl chloride and water. Some of the solvents that were used were acetone, isopropanol, ethanol, butanol, and cyclohexanol. As the reaction between t-butyl chloride and water progresses, the product becomes more and more acidic. When the solution is acidic, there is an abundance of H+ molecules in the solution, whose concentration can be determined using a titration with NaOH and an indicator. The indicator changes from yellow to blue when the solution goes from acidic to basic. The volume of NaOH needed to change the color is then used to determine the concentration of H+ ions and also the rate at which the reaction proceeds.
