It’s here!! Many friends have recieved their November issue of NC’s Our State Magazine which includes a feature story about Folk Camp! Issues should hit the newsstands towards the end of Oct and we hope to share an online version soon. It is with a heavy, heavy heart we have learned that long-time camper Suzi Horner passed away yesterday. We know you will join the entire Bannerman family in expressing our deepest sympathy to Jim, Kristen, Dan and the extended family. The Angster-Horners have brought such love and joy to camp throughout the years. We are grateful for the years they shared with us and the fun that Suzi brought to camp.

African American musical and cultural connections run deep in Appalachia and, as Dr. Kathy Bullock says, “it’s so important that we all are able to acknowledge and lift up the contributions that have helped make our culture what it is. We are all connected, and there is something healing about that concept.”

We’re excited to welcome Dr. Kathy to the Folk School again to teach “African American and Appalachian Musical Connections” from August 20-26, 2023. This popular class offers a deeper understanding of the many African American musical contributions to Appalachia, through study of historical context, music makers, and many genres of music. From vocal and instrumental songs to improvisation and more, get ready to sing, dance, and learn during this immersive exploration of rich and exciting traditions and styles.

Jasper and Lee Ann have hosted two such concerts at their home in Swannanoa one of which was with Craig Bannerman’s band Sourwood Ridge! What a great way to support local music!!
