Due to the application of herbicide destroying the largest rookery of wading birds in North America, the birds are no longer nesting there in the winter and springtime, but year-round at sunset, the birds migrate into the rookery area every day to safely roost at night.

As much as I love egrets and American Lotus, I am sorry to say the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Division of Plant Control has as of last year wiped out the lotus, and the egrets are feeling it too! Government overkill? OK, don't get me started!

It has been an interesting year at lake Martin considering that the birds are not nesting as usual, and the Nature Conservancy is complaining that La. Dept. of Wildlife and Fisheries is spraying 'too much' herbicide in the rookery. Oh really? Haven't I been saying that all along and for over 10 years now? If you were a nesting bird, would you want to nest in the 'dead' grass area shown below?
