Railroads use lights and hand signs so that train men and workers can "talk." The signs were first used over 130 years ago, before people had radios.
Railroads needed men to be able to send signals from far or near. Many times, the signal man would be too far away to use a whistle or horn. Colors, lights and hand signals were all used.

At the Brooksville Train Depot you can come and meet our signalman, Henry, and learn about the different colors and signals!

On January 22, 1912, the first official train to cross the Over-Sea Railroad arrived in Key West pulling Henry Morrison Flagler's private Railcar No. 91, as shown in this detail from a historic photograph.

Building the railroad across open water and through mosquito-infested lands took seven years, during which five hurricanes threatened to halt the project and three of them resulted in significant damage and loss of life. Today, virtually every important artifact and document associated with the Over-Sea Railroad is now a part of the Henry Morrison Flagler Museum's extensive collections, including Railcar No. 91 itself.

Learn more about the "Seventh Wonder of the World" on our website, or visit us in person to climb aboard Railcar No. 91 and visit our History Room.

Brooksville’s Train Depot has been in the same location since it was built in 1885. As part of the Rails to Trails program, the old railroad track bed is now the Good Neighbor Trail. It’s located at 70 Russell St., Brooksville, FL 34601

The 1885 Train Depot Museum is made up of four parts and is open to the public Friday & Saturday from noon – 3pm. There is an office where passengers would come to buy their tickets, arrange for freight shipments, and send telegrams. Next, the freight room houses train artifacts and displays depicting historical railroad events.

On the enclosed dock of the museum, visitors can ring the bell, sound the siren, or take pictures sitting in an original 1925 LaFrance Fire Engine; the first fire engine purchased by the city of Brooksville. There is also work car was originally owned by Cu**er Sons Cypress Lumber Company.

The Brooksville Train Depot Museum is not just about trains. It also houses a Corn Sheller, various historical artifacts, and a collection of books, pictures, and maps that can be used for research.
