Katie Ketterhagen is a young horse trainer currently residing in central Texas. Growing up in Wisconsin, she started riding lessons at the age of 7, and by the age of 9 her mother bought her her first horse. She began competing locally at the age of 10, and the training and preparation for a competition became a passion. By 14 she was starting her first horse under saddle, an Arabian mare she'd ra
ised, and also started giving lessons to young beginner riders. After graduating high school, Katie attended The University of Findlay for two years, majoring in Western Equestrian Training, to further her knowledge of horsemanship and training. During her summers of college, she interned for Tommy Garland, following her love for the Arabian breed. After that she returned to Wisconsin to continue giving lessons and started taking in outside training horses. Her mother convinced her to apply for the 2012 Extreme Mustang Makeover in Madison Wisconsin. After placing 3rd, and buying her Mustang (Tater) back, her love for the wild horse stuck. She continued competing in the Extreme Mustang Makeovers, and in between it all spent some time working for Dan James of Double Dan Horsemanship. In 2014 Katie moved to Texas to get away from the frozen winters so she could continue to train and teach year round! Katie takes in horses of any breed, any discipline, any level of training. Introducing star performer number 2! A 3 year old Mustang gelding from Little Owyhee NV, named Abracadabra! Also known as “Magic.”
I adopted Magic in June of 2019, competed in the Texas TIP Challenge in August, and came home the Champions! He is just over 7 months from wild, and this will be the biggest, baddest show he’s ever experienced! He’s known to get a little stage fright in front of a crowd, but hopefully he can keep his cool for our performance and show off what he can do!

I’m going to introduce one of my star performers who will be featured in my freestyle: Tater!
Tater is an 11 year old Mustang Mare from Warm Springs Canyon, NV. She is the first mustang I ever trained, back in 2012 for the EMM in Madison Wisconsin. She won me two buckles at the event, the Rookie Buckle and the Young Gun Buckle, and we finished in 3rd place overall.
Tater has been working hard the last few months learning new skills just for our Magic performance!! She is so excited to show off her cool moves at the show! 😉✨

Sunday funday! We went to a ranch horse show in Stephenville, we only showed two horses but we took 5! The “babies” did awesome hanging out at the trailer all day, and the two mares showed strong all day long! The weather went from winter coat cold in the morning, to sunburn hot in the afternoon, then to sand in your eyes windy, about ten minutes of perfect, ending with pelting rain, hail, thunder and lightning! 🤣
Both Tater and Bitsy placed well in all their classes, Tater and I ended up high point champions for the open division!
We met tons of awesome new people, looking forward to showing with them again next month!

Mustang update! We picked up our new wild Mustangs for the Players Choice EMM on Friday. On Saturday we tragically lost my best dog ever, Flicka. It’s been tough to do anything, especially starting a new mustang without her, she was always there in the pen with me making sure I was safe, and showing the horses that humans weren’t so bad. They were always more curious and more brave to come up to me when she was there.
I sat in my horses pen a few times offering him hay and crying. Yesterday I was able to get our first real training session in and just worked on focusing on me, approach and retreat, and petting his face. Thankfully was able to slip his halter back over his ear. I got a lead rope on and started working on leading. All in all he did well. He’s mostly bothered by outside stimuli, especially someone riding a horse, so will be working on focusing and relaxation, and hopefully ponying him soon.
Went to a roping to watch Craig rope last night, the arena had a perfect spot for Tater and I to sit and watch! 😉

Texas TIP Challenge is complete!! I told Magic we wanted to bring home all blue ribbons, so we did! 😁 And we actually tied for first in trail with Craig, but I still got the blue ribbon 😎🥳🤣 Magic and I came home the Champions, followed by Craig and Hutch bringing home the Reserve Champion title!
My freestyle was done at liberty, which was very risky seeing as I had never done liberty with him outside of my round pen, and the people in the stands frightened him, but he was pretty dang awesome! He got spooked towards the end and left, but came right back and did the lay down. I’m mostly happy that he did his magic trick and pulled the rabbit out of the hat!! 😁👏🏻👏🏻
Back home with our boys and now we will be preparing them for the EXCA Mustang Race in November!
At the Texas TIP Challenge!! Have had these boys for 80 days prepared for the TIP challenge (like an Extreme Mustang Makeover, but all in hand.) Had our first class this morning, Magic and Hutch have been doing awesome! Magic and I took 1st in the pattern class, and Craig and Hutch came in 3rd!

It is so fun and rewarding to watch our Mustangs transform from wild to domestic, both mentally AND physically! Magic is only 3 and has some growing to do yet, but in 56 days he has put on some good fat and muscle, as well as a slight color change! 🤣😉

“Hey human.. there’s something wrong with my Hay Chix net! Yeah, it’s empty! Can you fix it please?!” -Wild Mustang’s first time eating out of a hay net.. I’d say he’s got it figured out! 😜
This is how you load a Champion into a trailer. 😜😉 17+ hour drive home, Delilah got the whole front half of the trailer to herself so we left her loose to turn around, lower her head and stand in whatever position is most comfortable. She has a water bucket, alfalfa mush, two Hay Chix hay nets, one full of alfalfa and one full of grass hay, and got a dose of electrolyte paste from ForeFront Equine! Hoping for an easy drive home and then this girl will be getting some much needed rest!

Hero’s Ranch Trail class on Sunday! He rocked it!! We took 4th out of 16 pretty dang broke horses! I don’t think anyone believed me that he was wild 3 months ago.. 😂 Very happy with his performances this weekend. 🤗
Hero and I took part in an open show today, we definitely stood out competing against lots of really nice paints and quarter horses, but we did well! Our best class was trail, it was the tough super tight pleasure horse type of trail pattern that’s meant for horses that move slower than the speed of smell, but we rocked it and took 3rd out of 8! 👏🏻😄

Since Hero had gotten pretty upset by the judges sitting in the arena at the horse show, I decided to put a judge in my arena. He’s getting less fearful. 👍🏻😂

Day 57: Hero went to his first horse show! This is a video of our w/t Trail class, when we get to the third obstacle you’ll see that’s when he notices that the judges are sitting in chairs inside the arena.. 😱 #wegonnadie But if you keep watching, you’ll see that we made an amazing recovery, and finished the pattern!! So very proud of my big scaredy cat! 👏🏻😄😁
