Big project starting at Higbee Beach this month, which will close much of the WMA for two years.

The DEP will make a presentation on the project and take questions at the public meeting scheduled for 5:30 p.m., Feb. 8 at Lower Township’s Municipal Hall, 2600 Bayshore Road, Villas. See the full story for links to virtual access, as well as how to submit questions about the project.

The project at Higbee Beach Wildlife Management Area in Cape May County calls for protection against storm surge and future sea level rise through a 6,861-foot long earthen barrier.

Clear skies and low moonlight should make for great conditions to catch the Geminid meteor shower tonight over South Jersey! Peak rates of 120 shooting stars an hour are expected to continue for the next few days.

Those in the favored regions for viewing should be sure to bundle up, as overnight temperatures will be in the teens and 20s.

We had the privilege of being part of this program in the past and it's always wild to see the data from tagged billfish come back. Not only does the IGFA Great Marlin Race fuel the competitive spirit of recreational anglers, it also collects hoards of incredibly valuable data through citizen science.

Definitely worth a read!

IGFA’s Great Marlin Race continues to track the surprising migrations of billfish. This year, the winning marlin traveled 7,819 nautical miles.

Silent but (almost) deadly. In the next chapter of “Things That Go Bump In The Night,” this curious red fox was on the hunt for an early breakfast when she almost became breakfast herself. Watch this owl swoop in attempting to pull a snatch and grab. Creepin’ while you sleeping. 🦉 This great horned owl came in with a silent sneak attack on an unsuspecting field mouse last night. MISSING BOARD! We had a board walk on us from The Cove Beach on Monday, July 2nd and looks exactly like this board shown. It is a navy blue 9’ soft top by Doyle Surf with black fins and a black leash. There are very few Doyle boards around this area so if you see a brand new blue one; that’s probably ours. An ominous horizon at surf lessons today! We’re hearing that this smoke was from a structure fire in Cape May Point. Hope everyone in that area is okay.

Just a little brown bat hanging on a branch. 🦇 This little guy either picked the wrong spot to hibernate or sprung himself out of hibernation a bit too early.
