It's Fall Folks: Colors of The Season Are Falling All Around

The brightest colors of the state begin in Island Falls and get brighter as you drive toward the City of Caribou, Maine.

🍁 The ride to State Park would feature great farm vistas and the Maine Solar System model adds extra interest to your drive.
🍁 Drive to St. Agatha for a great place to eat with views of the water and bright foliage below.
🍁 Play a round of golf in Southern Aroostook as that part of the region is known for its maple trees and the courses are in terrific shape!

The Maine Fall Foliage Report is updated each Wednesday through October or until the last leaf drops. 🍁🍂

Be sure to check out the new interactive foliage map at the official fall foliage website, www.mainefoliage.com. Visitors can zoom in on the scenic byways, Real Maine farms with pick-your-own options, apples, pumpkins, corn mazes, and baked goods, state parks and public lands, boat launches, and upcoming fall fairs and festivals.

Now is the time of year we all wear fluorescent orange when we're outside 🧡🟧 Don't worry, it's a fashion essential in Maine for the months of September through December.

Sportsmen and women are in the woods now as firearm season has just begun. Do you realize 83% of Maine is forested? Roughly 94% of Maine's forest land is privately owned, and more than half of that land area is open to the public. Be respectful and leave no trace.

Maine's grows more than 1.8 billion pounds of potatoes each year. 94% of that astounding number is grown in Maine's Aroostook County. It is the generationally owned farms that define the landscape and the culture of the people who live here.

Come, meet your farmer.

There are more than 65 species of native trees in the woods of Aroostook County. That many different types of trees mean the landscape has more than 65 different colors, shades, and textures! Houlton, Maine has begun to see great color, but Caribou and Fort Kent, Maine are seeing spectacular reds and oranges spread through the vast vistas.

Bike on into fall! The flaming foliage of the season has begun to put on a show of gold, amber, and crimson colors.

Mountain Biking on gravel roads around Island Falls, Maine leads to the 27-acre site at the confluence of the West Branch of the Mattawamkeag River and First Brook. This was a special place for a young Teddy Roosevelt in 1878 where he hunted and fished while visiting the area. A plaque commemorates the site and it reads:

"This place, to which a great man in his youth liked to come to commune with God and with the wonder and beauty of the visible world, is dedicated to the happy memory of Theodore Roosevelt. Stranger, rest here and consider what one man, having faith in the right and love for his fellow man was able to do for his country." Hermann Hagedorn

Did you know the first place to see the colors of fall foliage in New England is Maine's Aroostook County?

Today in the very northwestern corner of Aroostook, the Town of Allagash, leaves are the most vibrant. But those will quickly move south through the region to Caribou, then Houlton, and then to Island Falls by October 5th.

New England's most north easterly location welcomes the colors of the season in Late September and the towns of Allagash, St. Francis, Portage Lake, and Soldier Pond see the first reds, orange, and yellows! As the leaves begin to change and the crisp autumn air sets in, there's no better time to vis...

Harvest has come to the patchwork of fields that lay over the Crown of Maine. Here the farmers' market is bustling with flavor of the season and roadside stands along the famed US Route 1 have a whole lot more than New Potatos!

Now is the time to take a slow Sunday drive, roll down the window, and simply just be.
