Deposition of Sand in a Desert Wash, Sonoran Desert National Monument, Southern Arizona
A huge amount of sand was deposited in this washes’ channel. I visit here often, as it is a stop on one of my Jeep Tour’s into the Sonoran Desert National Monument. There had been some tremendous and violent thunderstorms the night before. The channel usually looks like it does in the pic of my Jeep, minus the sand berm I am on…all flat! The last pic of the crested saguaro, an unusual mutation where a saguaro creates a fan shape instead of a column, is from another time, showing the flat channel there.

Went on a fantastic Ramble with Scott and Peter, relatives from out of town here for my wife Alice's Celebration of Life on Saturday. We all really needed this peaceful and serene experience after a very tough month!
Here are a bunch from our very early morning Ramble to beat the heat.

Spectacular in any direction!
Shot from on top of a high bank of the wash I was standing over.
The first 2 are the view looking southwest along this wash, and the last 2 are facing the opposite direction, looking to the northeast.

This morning I was over in the Sonoran Desert National Monument, looking for wildflowers. Last year at this time the SuperBloom had carpeted many sections of the Monument with large displays. This year is not a superbloom, but if you poke around you can find some that are obvious, and many that are hidden.
Here are a few.

The photos of the tiny purple flowers I posted a bit ago...have now openned!!
Also found out it is a Redstem Stork's Bill. The plant's common name "Stork's Bill" references the shape of its seedpods, which resemble a stork's open bill.

Rob’s Red Jeep Rambles went on a Ramble with Kathy and Dave yesterday.
The endpoint of out Ramble was back in the Bender Springs area adjacent to the Sonoran Desert National Monument.
We saw a wildlife water catchment, which supply water to wildlife in remote areas of Arizona. An installed, tilted concrete apron funnels rainwater, when it happens, into an underground reservoir, and a small rectangular trough allows the critters access to drink. 💧💦
We saw remains of a small deer, evidence of the closeness of predator and prey at the “water hole”. I Had previously found 2 adult deer skulls at this water catchment.
There was also some spectacular Sonoran Desert mountain scenery replete with cholla and saguaro cacti forests. Also we spied a few fledgling poppies…maybe we’ll see more next month??!!
We had a great time on our morning Ramble into the most diverse desert in North America!🌵🌵

Over in the Sonoran Desert National Monument this morning. Went all the way back to the Bender Springs Area of the Barry Goldwater Air Force Range Public use area that is no longer used for bombing or strafing the ground for target practice. This Public Area is adjacent to the Monument lands. A free permit is required. These lands have been largely untouched and are amazing examples of pristine Sonoran Desert Landscapes.
The Monument protects almost half a million acres of Sonoran Desert. 🌵

From our Friday Ramble with Paul and Scotty.
This pic is of a wildlife water catchment, deep in the remote Sand Tank Mountains in the Bender Springs area of the Sonoran Desert National Monument, The concrete apron funnels any rainwater into an underground reservoir and critters drink from a small trough nearby.
I thought the pattern on the concrete apron was cool, and I made a Photo Art rendering of it.

On our Ramble today, we entered the Bender Springs area of the Barry Goldwater Air Force Range public access lands, and the Range operates on the other side of the Sand Tank Mountains right where we were. 3 Air Force jets flew overhead from the Southeast and banked to execute a turn to the right, and headed North.

Had a fantastic Ramble with Paul and Scotty this morning in the Sonoran Desert National Monument. We saw a Cholla cacti forest on the road in, stopped and looked at some ranching ruins, stopped to look at a couple of petroglyphs I had found, visited a water for wildlife catchment at the base of a mountain, took in the amazing and beautiful Sand Tank Mountains in the Bender’s Spring area full of Saguaros, and on the way back out, checked out 2 different rock art installations, and finally saw a crested Saguaro. Quite a day packed with Adventure, great company, and some of the most beautiful and unique scenery on the planet!
