Cayucos offers miles of beach to explore from the pier downtown south to the Morro Strand State Beach toward Morro Rock. Temperatures are typically mild and during minus tides look for sea stars, sea anemones and other forms of sea life along rocky tide pools. Reminder: Look but don’t remove our thriving ocean friends!

The beauty of a place lies not in its grandeur, but in the memories it holds. 🙏🏼🌊

Sitting on a prominent hillside overlooking the Cayucos Pier and a distant Morro Rock is the historic Borradori Garage. Originally built in 1932 along the Roosevelt Highway, it’s a familiar landmark for Highway 1 travelers entering or exiting Cayucos at the north end of town.

Hard to believe the last days of summer are upon us. But the best weather is yet to come! There are fewer foggy days and more clouds in the fall, often producing dramatic sunrises and sunsets. No matter the season, nothing soothes the soul like a day at the beach. 🌊

Cayucos is a throwback to the old-style California beach town, with a small residential population and laidback vibe. The Cayucos Pier in particular is a popular surfing spot for locals and visitors alike, and it is one of the few places in California where surfers have historically jumped off the pier to avoid the long paddle out to the breaking waves. If you don’t surf, it’s fun to walk out on the pier and watch the surfers up close. Don’t forget to bring your camera for epic sunrises, sunsets and catching surfers in action! 🌊

The Point Estero was a fishing boat that originated from Morro Bay Harbor. In July 2017 it unfortunately ran aground in fog at the eastern part of Estero Bluffs State Park. It remains there, now as a point of visitor interest. Park at a public dirt pullout along Highway 1 about 3 miles north of downtown Cayucos for blufftop trails to the shipwreck. Enjoy sweeping ocean views while watching for shorebirds, sea lions or seals and possible blows and splashes from whales on the horizon!

Look for free street parking along Pacific Avenue and Studio Drive between homes that allow public access to the beach. Along Pacific Avenue you’ll find paths next to “Coastal Access” signs near these streets: 1st, 3rd, 6th, 8th, 10th, 12th, 16th, 19th and 21st. It’s well worth exploring them all 🌊

One of our favorite hiking spots is the Estero Bluffs State Park. Look for trail access pullouts along Highway 1 about two miles north of downtown Cayucos. We recommend the pullout at the old windmill you’ll see from the highway for easiest parking and walking. Choose the trail down to a beach cove with tideoools to explore at low tide, or the trail that veers south along the blufftop that leads directly to a shipwreck!

The Estero Bluffs State Park is dedicated for public use. In the 1980s, residents of Cayucos and the surrounding communities joined forces to stop coastal development and preserve this open space. The Trust for Public Lands purchased the property in 2000 and deeded it to the State in March 2002. In order to protect the park’s bluffs and its magnificent viewshed, the Trust gave the Cayucos Land Conservancy a perpetual conservation easement that limited activities and facilities (no restrooms or drinking water) in the day-use-only park.

The park offers several recreational opportunities such as sea kayaking, fishing, hiking, bird watching & wildlife viewing. To learn more about this area, visit The Museum of Natural History in nearby Morro Bay State Park, which has exhibits that cover natural features, cultural history, Native American life, geology, and oceanography - California State Parks

Great capture by Morro Bay Whale Watching of a Humpback whale lunge feeding out front of Cayucos Beach this weekend with Shoreline Inn... on the beach in the background! We’ve seen a lot of whale activity from shore this week - binoculars or a telephoto lens recommended. To get a true close up of our currently migrating friends, consider a tour with Morro Bay Whale Watching www.morrobaywhalewatching.com 🐋🌊

Reminder: Cayucos Farmers Market is FriYay! Look for fresh produce, plants and flowers, locally made skincare, tamales, the best fresh kettle corn in the West, specialty foods and more.
See you at the corner of “D” St. & Ocean Ave. a block up from the beach 10 AM-12:30 PM. Then enjoy lunch at any one of Cayucos’ locally owned restaurants or delis. Make it a day of shopping topped off with a stroll on beautiful Cayucos Pier. We’ve recently begun to see Humpback whales on the horizon - don’t forget bringing your binoculars or telephoto lens 😊🌊📷

Have you seen the beautifully restored mural painted on the southern side of the historic Way Station building on Ocean Avenue?

The mural, ‘Delivery at the Cottage Hotel’ by Manuel Cruz III was completed last year. The original mural was done in 1993 by John Meng and facilitated by the now-inactive Cayucos Mural Society. (Slide to the last photo to see the original mural).

High winds blew off and destroyed one of the mural panels in 2022 leaving a gaping hole in the image. The property owners, Mary Ellen Eisemann and husband Hank, sought to restore the mural, and after several months of searching, found Manuel Cruz III, a professional artist and muralist from the Bay Area.

The restoration was important to the Eisemanns to preserve the history it represented. The Way Station building a block up from the beach was built in the late 1800s and once housed a hotel and dining room for worldwide travelers near the busy pier and warehouse Capt. James Cass built in 1875. The Hearst family were among the hotel’s regulars traveling from San Francisco to San Luis Obispo by private railway car. A horse-drawn surrey would pick them up for the ride up the coast to the castle.

You’ll now find Lunada Garden Bistro at the Way Station and Luna Coffee Bar in the immaculately maintained garden patio area behind it.

Come to the corner of D Street and Ocean Avenue on any summer Friday morning, and you’ll find the Cayucos Farmers Market! This beloved tradition takes place 10am to 12:30pm every Friday between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

Every week, farmers, ranchers, bakers and purveyors of all kinds show up in downtown Cayucos to sell their goodness. In addition to farm fresh fruits and produce, the market features sourdough bread, cookies, handmade sauces and dips, plants, flowers, hot tamales, face and body oils and more - all with a breathtaking ocean view. 🌊

For an easygoing summer morning, grab a bite to eat at the farmers market, then enjoy a walk down the Cayucos Pier. Or spend some time in our locally-owned, unique shops - no chain stores or restaurants here 🤙🏼😊

We hope you’ve enjoyed the long holiday week so far! We’re expecting an especially busy next few days filled with Cayucos friends coming to the beach to beat the extreme inland heat. Please be patient with crowds and be careful out there on the roads.
Reminder: Bring large bags to pack out your trash as available trash cans are filling up fast. Leaving trash piled on top of garbage containers doesn’t help - seagulls carry off the debris and spread it on the beach or the streets. Thank you and have a wonderful weekend 🌊🤙🏼😊

We invite you to gather at Cayucos Pier this Memorial Day Monday at 3 PM for the “Lost at Sea” ceremony - the only one of its kind in California.
🇺🇸The annual ceremony honors all military, fishermen and civilians lost at sea. The tolling of the bells and meaning of the Missing Man flying formation, demonstrated with an Estrella Warbird Museum vintage war plane flyover, is explained to those gathered. You’re also invited to participate in the blessing of the wreath before it’s tossed into the sea.
🇺🇸There will be a march to the end of the pier - this year as far as we can safely go to the end that’s closed due to winter storm damage.
🇺🇸We are grateful to the sponsoring Rotary Club of Cayucos and many volunteers, military and law enforcement agencies involved in bringing us this somber and moving seaside tribute.

Cayucos, Take Me Away

Welcome to Cayucos, an idyllic little beach town of about 3,000 and one of the last California coastal communities where time has stood still. Rich in history, you’ll find unspoiled beaches, tide pools for exploring, mild temperatures year-round and a landmark pier for fishing and romantic sunset strolls. If you prefer a local vibe vs. touristy vibe, you’ll find it in Cayucos.

Located twenty minutes north of San Luis Obispo on scenic Highway 1 between Morro Bay and Cambria, Cayucos is nestled among rural ranch lands with free-range cattle grazing, rolling green hills and the sparkling Pacific Ocean. The breathtaking landscape calls outdoor enthusiasts, from the protected Estero Bluffs with its miles of trails to bikers traveling the winding country roads. The ocean beckons surfers, kayakers and Stand-Up Paddlers to choice coastal spots; kite surfers to windy coves and aerialists to launch from the heights of a grassy peak at the town’s south end locals call “Hanglider Hill.” And don’t forget the community skate park in the pier parking lot, enjoyed by skaters and spectators alike.

Cayucos is home to innovative, locally sourced dining establishments - offering famous fish tacos, specialty desserts to fine dining - charming hotels and motels, antique stores to explore, an Art Gallery inside the Vet’s Hall, an original boardwalk and a saloon for social gathering, live music and card games.

Each year visitors come by the thousands for the traditional family and pet friendly events: An old-fashioned 4th of July Parade, Bingo and a fireworks show from the Cayucos Pier; the New Year’s Polar Bear run into the sea (prizes for best costumes); a downtown Spring parade for dogs and a festival celebrating Sea Glass; a Car Show, Christmas Night Open House and Antique Street Fairs.
