YESTERDAY'S STORM
The waves turn the ocean a tumultuous mix of sand and blue-green water where one day prior was a clear view to the ocean floor.
The wind is as if God was slowly turning up the dial from whisper to howls and then to screams as it whips through the rigging, ripping the ensign to shreds like it had been to war.
The skies have a thick grey blanket covering their previous blue perfection.
The rain is dispersed in unequal increments throughout the day, removing any evidence of salt from the decks.
We prepare for the worst and pray for the best, then we wait. We read, we play games, we converse, we enjoy the company with whom we were entrusted to weather the storm. We were present and attune to our environment as the storm took its time to blow through.
Daybreak brings a clear awareness of the surroundings. A sense of gratitude we had survived the night with no trials is illuminated by the sight of others that had not faired so well.
The grey weighted blanket, as if being tugged off the bed by a puppy, begins to reveal the sunshine and blue skies. The anemometer slows its spin as it regulates to a comfortable breeze. The sea calms her crazy and pushes us toward our next destination.
Some may have thought we lost a day of our trip due to the first tropical storm of the season, but what we gained was a new appreciation for the next day's sunrise, the lesson to take it one day at a time, and the wisdom to leave yesterday's storms in the past so today's beauty can be fully realized.
