On the beautiful Majestic Princess, just south of Victoria, British Columbia. First time I have seen the Northern Lights from a cruise ship. It was a good display but the light pollution from the ship did wash the colors out a bit. With 3000 people onboard the ship could not ‘go dark’. Way too dangerous to have everyone wandering around on deck with their faces pointed skyward!
The forecast is still promising for tonight as well.
Tahiti on Majestic Princess - 24 day crossing from Auckland to Seattle (via Tahiti, Moorea, Honolulu, Vancouver.
Been in the tropical paradise of Tahiti for the last two days (with overnight at Papeete). To Moorea tomorrow before starting the 5 day crossing to our next port Honolulu. On the slow boat to Seattle in another two weeks or so 😀
What a beautiful island. Did a tour yesterday and today jumped on the high speed ferry to Moorea (yes, we go there tomorrow but the ferry ride was so much fun). Been a wonderful and ultra relaxing voyage so far.

After 3 flights from Travese City and 25 hours from first take off. Here is my first view as we approach Auckland, New Zealand.
The 13+ hour leg was at 30% capacity so I had 3 seats all to myself. First time in decades of flying that I have ever really slept in Economy Class 😀
A different view of Los Angeles. About 5 mins from touchdown at LAX from Detroit. A beautiful and very new Airbus A321 made for a nice comfortable rGreat legroom on Exot Row20. The new seat back tech is great! Check out the heads up display.
Now 4 hours on the ground before the next 13 hour leg to Auckland, New Zealand.
Achieved a cruising Milestone on Sapphire Princess today. Pat and I were invited to the ‘Most Travelled Luncheon’. This is a special lunch attended by the Captain and his senior officers for the Top 40 most travelled guests. On this South American voyage we have a smaller percentage of Elite guests (150 days plus). Sometime the cutoff is as high as 500 days! We are around 270 days now and made the cut! Yay.
It was fantastic! Was very nice to chat with the Captain Todd McBain and his officers.
Good morning! Two photos tell the story of two voyages to Cape Horn. First one was two weeks about form 3.5 miles. 2nd and others are today from 0.3 miles. Wow!

This sight was amazing for a weather geek like me! Two weather systems within the length of Sapphire Princess.
We went from brilliant sun to fog to snow in just a few minutes! Love this place!
Charlotte Bay, Antarctic Peninsula - January 29th 2024
Tomorrow morning at 10am we will arrive at iceberg A23A. A truly remarkable and once in a lifetime experience. A23A broke away from the Antarctic Iceshelf in the 80s and then to grounded for 3 decades. It started drifting north again a couple of year ago. Enormous is the right word… it is 1600 square miles in size. Said to be 3 times the size of New Youk City and weighs in excess of 1 TRILLION TONS! It is showing signs of breaking up as it drifts into warmer waters and is unlikely to survive another year before breaking into smaller icebergs.
Meanwhile tonight…
It is erie and unnaturaly calm on the Drake tonight. Photo on left is 10.15pm and winds remain quite light around northerly at 16kt. Just to the west of us in the blue area it is Calm with no wind! Very very unusual… basically it almost never happens! Can we even call it the Drake Lake? Maybe Drake Pond is better tonight 😀
So… the other photo is Wednesday next week. The day we go north. That is NOT the Drake Lake! There are 3 separate systems in the passage. I think the Dragon is coming out to play!
Last year Sapphire Princess was slammed with winds of 100mph and some damage hapenned. Don’t think we will get it that bad but our Captain and 2 Ice Pilots will be timing our crossing. It takes 30 hours to cross the 600 miles of open water (3 Oceans - Southern ,Atlantic and Pacific Oceans converge here)

Our journey to Antarctica continues. Stopped by the ‘end of the world’ today. Well the most southerly inhabited town in the world - Ushuaia, Argentina. Now we are headed for the Drake Passage and onwards to Antarctica.
Ushuaia was just beautiful. Jagged mountain, lakes, ocean and rivers. This town is the kickoff point for most hikes in Patagonia (Tiera Del Fuego to be exact). We expect smooth seas tomorrow as we round Cape Horn and set course across the Drake to Antartica. The Drake is a 600 mile crossing. Then 4 days scenic cruising around the Antarctic Peninsula.
Unlike last year when we visited and the day was just above freezing… today is perfect with blue skies and 60f 16c. It is mid summer in the southern hemisphere and this is about as warm as Ushuaia ever gets.
Last year we lost internet coverage 6 days. This year Sapphire Princess has Starlink installed and we expect coverage to be maintained.

Most of you know that Pat and I run a boutique travel agency. After our 2023 voyage to Antartica we made a decision to specialize on South America and Antartica. This is a very underserved corner of our beautiful planet and one that we have come to love!
We were surprised to find out that most people think that a voyage to Antartica is either impossible or insanely expensive. It is neither… there are so many options big ships at a fair price $, smaller luxury ships $$ and incredible expedition ships $$$. All providing a different level of experience.
We are currently sailing our 2nd voyage to the bottom of the world. With stops in Punta Arenas, Ushuaia, Falkland Islands, Montevideo and Buenos Aires. We have two days crossing the (in)famous Drake Passage and 4 days cruising around the Antarctic Peninsula.
We want to help others experience this amazing adventure! We are thinking about putting together a small group of family, friends and clients for a 17 day Antarctic voyage on Sapphire Princess January 21st 2025.
