It's Wild Horse Wednesday!

At Assateague Island National Seashore most foals are born in late spring, but foals can be born in any month of the year. As foals are being born, it is important to give them plenty of space and be extra cautious. You can safely view the wild horses and foals by staying 40 feet (about a school bus length) away at all times.

One of the best ways to enjoy the beach, for sure!

According to Assateague National Seashore:

Warmer weather signals the season for beach campfires. Bring a shovel and bucket and remember to follow these rules to have a relaxing and safe fire on the Maryland side of Assateague Island.

-Use local firewood
-Place your fire out of the lifeguarded beach, below the high tide line.
-When done, extinguish your fire completely with water (never bury the hot coals with sand).
-Take any remaining wood with you.

Campfires are a great way to wind down at the end of the day and experience the park after dark.

I’ve found a few of these over the years!

Hey, can you pass me my purse? 👛🧜‍♀️

Sometimes called a “mermaid’s purse”, this pouch is an egg case of a skate.

Skates are flat cartilaginous fish that spends their time along the sandy seafloor. Although skates lack a stinging barb, they are commonly confused with stingrays. The egg case shown in this photo is likely from a Clearnose Skate, common in waters around Assateague Island.

Each egg case has four “horns”, one on each corner, that help anchor it to the seafloor. When the baby skate is ready, one end will split open, and the baby emerges to its new life! Most egg cases that wash up on the beach are empty, but if you find one that isn't empty, make sure to get it back in the water as soon as possible.

You never know what you’ll find while beachcombing on Assateague Island!

These living fossils have changed very little in the last 85 million years. This 6 ft long fish is covered in hard plates called “scutes” that give its body an armor-like appearance.

It’s always fun to find new things on the beach but remember not to touch dead animals as they may have diseases and parasites that could be passed to humans. To learn more about Atlantic Sturgeon check out: https://www.nps.gov/articles/000/ncbn-species-spotlight-atlantic-sturgeon.htm

Please be reminded that parking is limited at Tom's Cove Park and will fill up. We encourage you to utilize the FREE trolley service that is paid for by the Chincoteague Chamber, which will drop you off right across the street from the Will Call tent and gate. The trolley will run the green and red routes from 9am -5pm and will also pick up from the High School, 4586 Main Street. After 5pm, there is a 50 cent charge per person. Hands down - one of our favorite food stops each summer! Happy to say we’ve been sampling the tacos and margaritas all 10 years. Pro tip: visit on a weekday for lunch to avoid long wait times and crowds. They’re popular for a reason!

On this day, back in 2015, which seems like a lifetime ago, Pico Taqueria opened the trailer window and started serving tacos for the first time. This is our 10th season, the big 1-0! We have some fun things planned as the summer moves along, starting with tomorrow, Thursday, May 2. All orders will be 10% off tomorrow. A small way to thank our loyal guests for taking a chance on us and our tiny shack so long ago, and to keep coming back! Ya'll have stuck with us and we love and appreciate each one of you.
