57 years ago today, December 18, 1966, Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas! premiered! The 26-minute short was originally telecast in the United States on CBS on December 18, 1966. CBS repeated it annually during the Christmas season until their last airing in 1986. Beginning in 1987, TNT began exclusively running the special. Unlike the years it aired on CBS, The Grinch now ran several times during the Christmas season. In 1990, TBS also began running the special. From 1996 until 2005, The WB Television Network also began airing the special at least once per season. Then in 2006, The Grinch returned to one of the big three networks, this being ABC, which began broadcasting it several times annually during the Christmas season until 2014. On August 13, 2015, it was announced that the special will move to NBC, which will air it twice during the Christmas season under a three-year licensing deal with Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution. It is currently aired during the Christmas season additionally on various cable channels owned by Turner Broadcasting System. including TNT, TBS, Cartoon Network, and Boomerang but with some scenes trimmed to fit more commercial time.
Boris Karloff, in one of his final roles, narrates the film and also provides the speaking voice of The Grinch. (The opening credits state, "The sounds of the Grinch are by Boris Karloff...And read by Boris Karloff too!") The special was originally produced by The Cat in the Hat Productions in association with the television and animation divisions of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios.

⛸️ Bring your ice skates for skating around the oval to your favorite holiday music, take a break by a warm fire while sipping hot chocolate, or go for a ride on a horse-drawn wagon. As a note, there are limited timeslots for the horse-drawn wagon, dog sled rides, and borrowing the skate assist seals. Make your reservation when you arrive by heading to the appropriate activity booth.

Let’s spread cheer to children in need this holiday season! We are here to make it easy for you to bring joy to our Anchorage community!

Anchorage Police Department (APD) and the Anchorage Cops for Community (AC4C) set up this beautiful Angel tree in our lobby. Check in at the lobby with our fantastic records clerks, and then select an angel right off the tree! Each angel includes the name, age, and Christmas gift wish of a child in need in our community. You can purchase the gift and bring it back unwrapped to our front counter in the lobby, along with the angel you selected. We will make sure the gift is wrapped and delivered to the child. Please bring all toys and angels back to the department by Friday, December 15 at 5:00 p.m.

APD Headquarters is located at 716 W 4th Avenue, Anchorage, and is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

It's almost here! Opening day for Arctic Valley's tube park is Thursday, November 30! We have sessions at 1:30, 3:00, 5:00, and 6:30. Please purchase tickets in advance on our website at https://arcticvalley.org/winter/tubing/

This first week we will probably not have lane 4 available (the one with the big 180 degree banked turns) but will have the other 3 lanes open.

We have also released tickets for the rest of this winter. Grab your tickets now for any session through April 6, 2024.

Elf on a shelf final departure letter:

Hi —-,

This is normally the time of year that I fly back to the North Pole and return home with Santa. The good news is that this year I won't be leaving. The bad news is that next year, I won't return, at least not how I have in the past.

See, you will be (age) next Christmas so this is the last year I will have the honor of being your magic elf. It is not, however, the last Christmas I will spend with you. I know it sounds confusing.

Here's the thing: My magic is nothing compared to the magic that is inside you. I was just a reminder that Christmas is about joy, surprise and mystery. Of course, you know that it's actually about Jesus' birthday, but joy, surprise and mystery are all symbols of that most special event.

I want to thank you for being a great elf owner. I have totally enjoyed watching you grow up. I hope you continue to treat others as you have me over the years. It is a great example of how we all should act all the time.

Always be kind and thoughtful. I loved the notes you left me asking how my trip went. It is a true gift to make someone else feel important and special. That's how you made me feel when you gave me little things you made or left me things you thought I would like.

Give to people when they need it. You gave me snacks so I wouldn't be hungry and bought me clothes to keep me warm. You even made me a house so I would have a place to rest.

Forgive. Remember when I TP'ed the house? What about that time I had too many Cheerios and left a mess in the kitchen? Surely you haven't forgotten when I marked up your school picture with a marker? Well, every time I made a mistake, you forgave me. We all make mistakes sometimes.

Remember that sometimes you just need a different perspective to figure things out. Think back to the mornings you looked for me but couldn't find me. What did you do? Your mom taught you to go a different corner of the room and be still and look again from a different viewpoint. Panic doesn't solve a problem but sometimes a different perspective can make all the difference.

Have fun and be curious. I hope you always approach new adventures with the excitement you had every time you looked for me!

Starting today, I no longer have my elf powers. You can touch me and nothing will happen. In fact, I'd love to have a hug after all this time.

After Christmas, keep me in my box where I will be safe. You can sit me out at Christmas but I will stay just a stuffed elf until you have a child one day. Then I will once again fly off to the North Pole to report on what I see.
