Charlie Musselwhite

“The blues today seems to resemble rock & roll more than real blues. The old blues had subtleties. Today they just want to beat you over the head with volume and technique. As if being able to play fast had meaning. It has no meaning if you’re not saying something and today it seems like most people don’t really understand the feeling of blues so they have nothing to say and there sure ain’t no feeling like it used to be.” - Charlie Musselwhite

In this era of cookie cutter festivals, often run by large corporate entities, it’s nice to know that they’ve been keeping it real down in Clarksdale, Mississippi.

" I just remember that I wanted to do something a little different from the same old slide guitar sound, so I came up with this unique kind of invention. I thought it was cool."

Lynyrd Skynyrd's Gary Rossington died in March, 2023. Back in 1999, he told us the weird trick he used for the slide part on Freebird…

One of the happiest surprises of my travel life has been Mississippi. Elvis's birthplace in Tupelo, Rowan Oak-William Faulkner's home in Oxford, the Delta and the blues in Clarksdale (where Robert Johnson sold his soul to the devil), the tragedy of Emmett Till and all that led to. "Complicated" is a word you hear throughout Mississippi - I'm glad I came and can't wait to return and dig deeper.

Have y’all seen the Delta Blues Museum - Clarksdale, Mississippi’s new Virtual Tours? Y’all can learn Blues stories like what instrument Pinetop Perkins played before settling into the piano, and why he made the switch. The best part - y’all can listen to these stories as told by Blues performers like Andrew “Shine” Turner. Thank you to local filmmaker, Coop Cooper, for filming and producing these Virtual Tours!
