We had a late cancellation for the Hideaway Cabin for this weekend and the timing couldn't be better! The weather is lovely, fishing is good, porch sitting is great and there's all sorts of things going on in our little neighboring Texas towns!
Spent the day getting things all spruced up for the spring vacation season. Reserve your getaway before all the dates are gone. Fishing is great. Porch sitting is awesome. Area Wineries are amazing and antiquing has never been better. See you when we see you!

Just a few of our reviews from Airbnb. We truly do have the best guests ever!
"This stay is amazing. the cabin is gorgeous, the lake is close. the views are great and deer are always around." Albert
"This cabin is exactly what we needed for a quick getaway. The location feels remote and private but is just a 10 minute drive to town. Being so close to the lake made for a quick trip to watch sunrise/sunset. The bed is SO comfortable - you never want to get out. Dusti was an excellent host and very accessible! We will be back!" Amy
"This cabin is so much more than can be described on this site. It is quiet, somewhat secluded, close to a lake, and just beautiful. The wildlife is beautiful and the care Mike and Dusti have taken to assure every need is met is evident as soon as you walk in. We will certainly be back!" Tish
"Great cabin in the woods. Walking distance to the lake. Dusti our host was shared every thing we needed to know in advance and communication was so easy. Allowing our fur baby made the trip special. The host has deer feeders so each morning and evening there are deer right out the door. Lots to do on property like horse shoes and corn hole. We just enjoyed the quiet on the screened in back porch and the very comfortable king size bed. During the day the lake and local shopping was amazing. We could not have wanted for anything else to make this getaway any better. If going on the weekend treat yourself to dinner at Olaf’s." Victoria
"The cabins are very very nice for a couple and small children to stay if visiting the area or the Lake, Had the pleasure of meeting the host's who are very personable and definitely went out of the way to ensure every detail was taking care of. My son and I stayed there for the weekend utilizing the cabin as a home base while visiting the Lake for other activities. We will definitely be back." Walter
And we have winners! Guests Mike and his granddaughter, Ari, won first place in their division during last weekend's bass tournament on Lake Whitney! Congratulations to them both!

Just the squeaky old roof turbine and the waterfall noises this afternoon.
The peaceful sounds of a lazy summer afternoon. ❤️
“Lordy! What have we done?” The ink was barely dry on the closing papers the first time Mike uttered those words, but they became our common response over the next two and half years.
Don’t get me wrong. That we bought a run down anything surprised no one. We’ve been real estate addicts for all of our forty three years together; discovering and buying fading, forgotten old homes no one else wanted. It became the accidental side business that sustained us during the lean years when whatever fueled our economy took a nosedive and our art sales went with it. In forty three years, we’ve bought and remodeled 15 properties in eight states - some were complete overhauls while others were minor updates and landscaping, but what they all needed most was a little love to bring out the shine again.
Our kids basically grew up in a never ending construction zone because we always lived in the homes during the remodeling, doing most of the work ourselves. We used contractors for things like septic systems and complicated electrical work, sometimes trading artwork for services. The properties were always purchased with resale in mind, but there are two or three that got into our hearts deeper than we intended. We loved what they became and missed them after we left. This place . . . with its broken windows, massively overgrown grounds, and endearing past reminded us of those. It was begging for someone to save it.
So there we were, with visions of bringing this once popular lakeside lodge back to life, but the scale of work was enormous! And that’s just what we could see on the surface. We knew there would be more challenges once we actually got started. And unfortunately, not one of the four buildings on the place was anywhere close to inhabitable.
After weeks of talking ourselves into and out of buying the place, we finally decided to make the absentee owner a ridiculous offer. He took it. We were elated, then deflated, excited, then scared, resolved and then committed. It was going to be a ton of work and we didn’t have the young, strong backs we had with the other major projects. Mike had commissioned artwork to finish and I had a full-time job. Lordy, what have we done!?
It took three months of weekends, holidays and vacation time (ours, our kids and our grandkids!) to clear the brush, trim trees and hire folks to haul off the junk stored in every building. It was another four months before we were able to get just one cabin livable so we had a place to stay while we worked on the others. The remodel of the main house took a over six months, during the dead of winter, using a variety of contractors - some good and some awful.
That was probably the worst six months we’ve ever spent in the remodeling world. When it was done, we needed a break from the swarm of contractors so we spent all summer and fall working on the grounds, including putting in a koi pond where the old swimming pool had been, extending the back deck, planting a garden and finishing up some of the detail work inside the main house.
In January of 2019, we stepped into the world of contractors again and started work on the last two cabins. While they tore out and rebuilt bathrooms and bedrooms, we scoured flea markets and antique stores to find real, vintage pieces to make the rooms feel warm and inviting.
The Hideaway Cabin is nestled in the woods and has a mountain cabin kind of feel, with a screened-in porch that faces the woods. The cabin we call Angler’s Den is all about fishing, with old fishing gear and vintage fishing art. It faces the koi pond and deer feeder which is almost always being used by deer, squirrels or doves. The little cabin we first lived in is called Sweet Tea. It has a vacation/pink flamingo/Savannah kind of style and faces the other side of the property, with a nice sitting area out front under the trees.
Just a few tweaks here and there and she’s ready to share with folks looking for a quiet place to kick back and relax for a couple of days - fishermen who want a place to stay with room for their boats and other trailered toys while their wives visit the Silos and Magnolia Market in Waco or young folks who want to spend a quiet day kayaking on the lake and cooking out at their cabin at night. We hope to meet new friends and hear all about their fishing stories and what brought them to the Red Canoe. But best of all will be old friends who happen to be in our neck of the woods and can take some time to sit on the deck, feed the koi and laugh about the crazy adventures we’ve shared.
