Got beach plans this long holiday weekend? You’re not alone – sea turtles and shorebirds are still using our sandy beaches for important nesting (and – in the case of shorebirds – resting and foraging) habitat.
Share the shore with sea turtles and shorebirds (say that 5X fast!) by following these easy tips:
• Pack it out, pack it in — at the end of the day take all beach gear home, stash any trash, and fill in man-made holes to keep sea turtles (including hatchlings) from getting trapped.
• Sea turtles dig the dark — lights on or along the beach can disorient hatchling sea turtles, leading them away from the ocean and into danger. Avoid using cell phone lights or flashlights if at the beach after dark. Living or staying in a beachfront building? Turn off exterior lights if you can and close curtains to block light facing the beach.
• Give sea turtles and shorebirds plenty of space. If an animal changes its behavior when you approach, you’re likely too close.
• Watch for sea turtles in the water by Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico beaches, particularly around inlets, and slow down if you see one at the surface to avoid an unintended boat strike.
• If you find a sea turtle hatchling or adult sea turtle in distress, please call our Wildlife Alert Hotline so that trained staff can provide guidance: 888-404-FWCC (3922).

Turtle Count from the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge!

This week's sea turtle nest count is 1232 loggerheads, 172 greens and 4 leatherbacks. Remember that nests are hatching now, so after you enjoy the beach, be sure to leave it flat and clear and ready for the night's activity.

If you see hatchlings on your Space Coast beach day, make sure to admire them from afar. These little guys have a long journey ahead of them and need all the space they can get. Please pack out all your trash and beach gear, knock down your sand castles, and fill in your holes before you leave for the day. The next generation of sea turtles will thank you!
