Fun Fact Friday…Did you know that Spanish Moss isn’t from Spain nor is it actually a moss? Spanish Moss can be found in the US from Texas to Virginia. Its preferred habitat is a healthy tree in tropical swampland. Spanish Moss is also a bromeliad and is in the same family as pineapples and succulent house plants.

Fun Fact Friday…Did you know the Mitchelle C. was a sidewheeler named for the youngest daughter of Benjamin Grier Collins, an owner and officer of the steamer line? In the early 1900s, at 100 feet in length, this sidewheeler was considered the finest local steamboat having staterooms and the capacity for 125 passengers and 85 tons of freight.

Fun Fact Friday…Did you know City Hall was damaged by an earthquake? In 1886 an earthquake took Charleston by surprise and the effects were felt in Conway causing this building to crack. Earthquake rods were installed as a result and reinforced by metal plates that can be seen on the fountain and 3rd Avenue sides of City Hall.

Fun Fact Friday… Did you know Coastal Carolina Junior College began as a branch of the College of Charleston and met after hours at the old Conway High School on Laurel Street? The College began in 1954 with class 53 students in attendance.

Fun Fact Friday…Did you know the bell in the steeple at Kingston Presbyterian Church sank, twice? Funds were raised for the bell in the mid-19th century and was ordered from a foundry in New York. The ship delivering the bell sank along with all the items onboard. Funds were raised for a second bell, but that ship sank too. Fortunately, the bell was salvaged.

Fun Fact Friday…Did you know in the 1920s the most popular swimming hole was also Conway’s first railroad trestle? This trestle bridged the Waccamaw River near the Kingston Lake junction and later became the inspiration for the name of The Trestle Café in Downtown Conway.

Fun Fact Friday…Did you know the railroad tracks pictured here originally had a different path? Mary Beaty caught wind of the tracks being laid through her grove of oak trees along with plans to cut down one of her biggest trees and was not happy. As the work began, Mary Beaty rushed out to the workmen brandishing her shotgun and threatened dire consequences to the first man who “dared to touch one bough”. The tracks were laid down in the middle of Main Street.

Fun Fact Friday…Did you know a Conwayborough map drawn in 1801 by William Hemmingway resides in the Horry County Museum? In 1801 lots on this map were priced from $1.75 to $51.50 depending on the proximity to the waterfront or downtown. This 1922 copy was drawn by surveyor Sanfor D. Cox Jr.

Fun Fact Friday…Did you know the F.G. Burroughs sidewheeler steamboat was the flagship of the Burroughs and Collins Company? As the largest of the steamboats constructed in Conway, this boat measured 125 feet in length and 20 feet across and could carry 130 passengers and 150 tones of freight. The original mural was created in 1983 and restored in the summer of 2015.

Fun Fact Friday…Did you know the warehouse that once stood beside the Conway bridge known as the Lower River Warehouse was built in 1880? This warehouse was the riverfront terminal for the Waccamaw Line of Steamers which provided regularly scheduled transportation of people and cargo between Conway and Georgetown on the Waccamaw. Fun Fact Friday…Did you know the first banking facility in Horry County was housed in the front office of this two-room building? This building originally stood on Main Street and was home to Col. C.P. Quattlebaum’s law office. Around 1900 the building was moved to its present location, 903 Third Avenue.

Fun Fact Friday… Did you know the Southern Live Oak was a secret weapon of the U.S. Navy? The USS Constitution was built in 1797 from a special mix of Southern Live Oak and White Oak creating a super dense mix of oaks which were layered to make the hull of a ship even more impenetrable from enemy fire.
