Always BE WAVE AWARE when on the coast, especially during a High Surf Warning.
01/04/2023

Always BE WAVE AWARE when on the coast, especially during a High Surf Warning.

***HIGH SURF WARNING***
The National Weather Service has issued a High Surf Warning for Coos and Curry Counties - Wednesday, January 4th at 4pm through Friday, January 6th at 10am.

Dangerously large breaking waves peaking at 30 to 35 feet are expected. Extremely large breaking waves will create very hazardous conditions along beaches and area shorelines. Waves will inundate beaches and surge into normally dry areas.

As always BE WAVE AWARE and NEVER TURN YOUR BACK ON THE OCEAN. Stay off logs on the beaches and off the jetties as waves are expected to top the jetties and inundate the low lying beach areas.

For Storm Watching, we recommend safe viewing areas including the Bastendorff Beach Overlook (not at beach level) and Shore Acres State Park.

HOLIDAY LIGHTS AT SHORE ACRES TIMED ENTRY SYSTEM – We wanted to help everyone understand the new Timed Entry System for this year’s Holiday Lights at Shore Acres.

 The Timed Entry System is basically a PARKING PASS to park at Shore Acres for ONE HOUR. There is no limit to how many people can be in the vehicle! You are only paying for the parking spot. The cost is $5 per vehicle*.

 ONLY HALF THE PARKING SPOTS have been put up for reservations so far.
 The other half will be released on a ROLLING 7 DAYS system. That means, 7 days prior to the day you want to go, you need to look at the site again to see if parking spaces are now available. So, if you want to visit on Thanksgiving Day you need to get on the site on November 17th and see if there are times available. November 18th, they will release the rest of the spots for November 25th and so on and so on.

 TO BOOK A SPACE, visit https://oregonstateparks.reserveamerica.com/tourParkDetail.do?contractCode=OR&parkId=402381 **
 OR STOP AT THE COOS BAY VISITOR CENTER during business hours Monday-Friday and our team will help you book a time.

 This was instituted to eliminate the long wait times to get into the park. And to make the event SAFER FOR EVERYONE. When cars lined up on Cape Arago Highway for hours on end, they blocked this dark two-lane road to any emergency vehicles that may be needed at the park and blocked access to homes and businesses along this stretch of the road.

* The $5 parking fee will be waived if you have a state park day pass, a coastal passport or other special parking pass issued by Oregon State Parks. YOU MUST STILL BOOK AT TIME, even if you have a park pass.

** You will need to create an account on the state park’s site when you check out.
