Wishing you all a Happy World Ocean Day and a happy first day of !!!
Let’s all do everything we can to help the oceans to be a welcoming home for sea turtles, and the beaches to be a welcoming nesting location for them — especially for the five amazing types of sea turtles (see image below) that spend time in the Outer Banks area!!!
Remember, if you visit the beach, please, when you leave,
KEEP THE BEACH:
-CLEAN
(remove all beach toys, chairs, tents, etc. & pick up trash on beach - yours and any other);
-FLAT
(take down sandcastles and fill holes before you leave for the evening); and
-DARK
(turn off Oceanfront lights at night, and NEVER shine lights — including car headlights, flashlights, or cellphone flash — at a nesting momma turtle on the beach at night!!!)!
And don’t forget:
If you’re in the northern Outer Banks and accidentally hook a sea turtle, or see a sea turtle on the beach or crawl tracks in the sand, please IMMEDIATELY call the NEST hotline: 252-441-8622!
This conservation work for protected sea turtles in the northern Outer Banks is authorized by the NC Wildlife Resources Commission (ES Permit 24ST10).

Wednesday Wonder…
Next month, in May, we’ll start having turtle moms lay their eggs on the beaches of the OBX. Did you ever wonder which species of turtle is most likely to lay eggs here in the OBX?
There are 5 different species of sea turtles who visit and/or nest on the Outer Banks. They include the Loggerhead, Green, Leatherback, Kemp’s Ridley, and Hawksbill sea turtles. Our most frequent nesting turtles are Loggerheads, accounting for over half of our nests each season.
