PSA: As this weekend marks the beginning of summer, CMS with our partner North Carolina Sea Grant provides guidance on breaking the "Grip of the Rip!" Know your options! 80% of all surf rescues are related to rip currents.
Options:
1) Relax, rip currents will not pull you under
2) Don't fight the current
3) Escape by swimming parallel to shore (sideways)
4) Float or tread water, the grip will release you
5) Pay attention to RED flags that warn of Rip Currents

Exciting news!!!
N.E.S.T. has just installed signs on the Carova and Swan beaches in Currituck County. The signs encourage drivers to lookout for sea turtles and the volunteers who help protect them. Both are often on the beach at night, so it’s especially important for drivers to be aware.
Thanks to the great team of N.E.S.T. volunteers who made this happen!

Please do not have your dog on the sand after 10:00 or before 6:00. This is for the dog’s safety. The sand can reach temperatures in excess of 150 degrees during those hours over the weekend. A dog has no defense for this. Simply having water for them will not be enough.

I saw a family out having fun in the middle of the day yesterday with their dog tied to a stale set in the sand. No water, no blanket, and it was too hot for the pup to even lay down.

Don’t do that.

Do not leave your dog in the car, even with the windows down.

🏖 With a wide-open beach full of sand beneath our feet this summer, it can be a challenge for some beachgoers to resist the urge to pick up a shovel and start digging – sometimes aiming to create a hole for kids to play in. Whatever the reasons, it is important to recognize the immense danger potential associated with digging holes on the beach and understand that it can lead to serious injury or death. Not only is it dangerous, but the county also has an ordinance in place regulating the digging of deep holes on the beach.

If you do choose to dig a hole, please remember to fill it back in so it does not become a danger to other beachgoers, emergency responders, beach drivers, and marine life 🐢

Here are some good rules to follow:

✅ Never dig a hole deeper than the knees of the smallest person in your group
✅ Always fill in the holes you do dig each time you leave the beach for any period, whether during the day or at night
✅ Do not dig near the dune line or foreshore where emergency vehicles regularly travel
✅ Never attempt to dig a tunnel on the beach
