Covering nearly a million acres in a sprawling swath across Michigan's lower peninsula from Lake Michigan to Lake Huron, the Huron-Manistee National Forest offers abundant opportunities to recreate outdoors. Much of the park is in Iosco County near the Tawases, and the AuSable River cuts a path through the park. Hike, kayak, canoe, bike or ride an ATV through the only national forest in the lower peninsula.

Tawas Point Sunset.

Tawas Point State Park, located on the end of a sand spit that forms Tawas Bay along Lake Huron, is home to 183 acres of lakeside recreation and has been referred to as the “Cape Cod of the Midwest.” The park is a stopover site for hundreds of migrating birds in the spring and fall, making it a favorite spot for many bird watchers from all over the Midwest.

The park is home to a modern campground and overnight lodging facilities, popular for their location on Tawas Bay, where the water is shallow and warm for swimming. The park’s day-use area features a popular swimming beach, a picnic area and nature trail along the picturesque Lake Huron coast.

About 3 miles down Newman Street heading out of East Tawas is the DNR launch ramp for Tawas Lake. It is located on the south shore of the lake off of Rainbow Drive. Tawas Lake is one of the area's hot spots for pan fish and pike fishing and with a mix of ducks, geese and swans, with an occasional bald eagle sighting thrown in, Tawas Lake is very popular with local bird and wildlife enthusiasts as well.

Highbanks River Trail - a short, 7-mile hike along the bluffs of the Au Sable River will provide day hikers with some of the best, and most dramatic, views of the Au Sable River, where hikers or skiers will be able to look over the river valley, with clear views almost to Lake Huron in some spots.

The linear trail begins 14 miles NW of Tawas Bay, with access areas and parking at Iargo Springs, Lumberman's Monument, and Sid Town.

During the summer hikers may see bald eagles that nest in the area, along with many other wildlife that inhabit the area.

Shoreline Park - 429 W. Lake Street - Tawas City

Adjacent to Town Square, Shoreline Park's recreational identity comes from the 450-foot-long pier with an additional 100 feet added in 2021 to create a L-shaped pier. In 2020, the park also received lighting upgrades and an addition of 9 day docks. The presence of the pier encourages active (fishing) as well as passive (benches) recreational opportunities. Aside from the pier, Shoreline Park is also equipped with beach volleyball courts, two picnic pavilions, and a food concession stand with restrooms, boardwalk along the beach and playscape for the children.

Tawas Point Lighthouse is visible from this park. The 8.2-acre park is host to the annual Shoreline Arts & Crafts Show, on Memorial Day weekend; the Tawas Bay Water Front Fine Art Festival the 1st weekend of August, the Tawas Antiques on Tawas Bay the 2nd weekend in August and the Labor Day Arts and Crafts Show on Labor Day weekend. These events attract thousands of visitors. Both the park's pavilion and gazebo can be rented individually or together.

From the park, visitors can access the Tawas Bay Multi-Use Trails, part of Michigan’s Iron Belle Trail, along Lake Huron.

The Tawas Point Lighthouse is a fascinating attraction for maritime buffs. Although it has been remodeled several times, the station serves as the sole representative of a true Victorian-era style station built on the Great Lakes.
