The last few days have been fantastic! Tuesday's whale watch had us spending time with an adventurous Humpback whale and today's whale watch had us spending time with multiple Minke whales. The past few days have brought some foggy trips, but luckily it didn't hinder us from spending time with multiple Minke whales, Harbor Porpoise, Harbor Seals, Gray Seals, and Bald Eagles. We get fog often in Eastport during July and some of August, but it hardly ever stops us from finding whales. But let's hope for some fog free days ahead anyways. :)

Had a very busy day out on the water. We had a great group of people out fishing this morning, then both the Ocean Obsession and Pier Pressure were full on this afternoon's whale watch, followed by the Pier Pressure heading back out for a sunset whale watch. On the afternoon trip, they saw lots of Minkes and the Ocean Obsession got a few good looks at a Finback whale out in the Bay, but the whale moving around so much and the sea state made it a little difficult to get more than a few looks. We also observed a bunch of Bald Eagles, including the Ocean Obsession seeing three adults fighting over a Bonaparte Gull that one of them had taken for a meal. As always we saw Harbor Porpoise, Harbor Seals, Gray Seals, and ended the trips with pulling a lobster trap. It was a HOT, but amazing day.

Another video from our 7/16 sunset whale watch.

07/17/2024

7/16/24: The fog seemed to be holding strong as we departed on our afternoon whale watch, but luckily it quickly moved off as soon as we entered the Head Harbor Passage. So we made our way to Sandy Ledge and watched some Harbor and Gray Seals along with a close look at an adult Bald Eagle. Then we made our way further out the passage and spent time with 3 different Minke whales. We finished our trip with a pass through the Old Sow whirlpool. I think it's safe to say our passengers had a great time.

We also had a private sunset whale watch with a great family and to say that it was a perfect evening for whale watching would be an understatement. We spent time with a few different Minkes and I actually remembered to pull my phone out to capture the moment.

7/15/24: Today we got word that a Humpback whale had been seen in the morning near Eastport, but unfortunately as of when our trip started, it had disappeared. So we headed out the Head Harbor Passage and made our way over to Sandy Ledge to see some Seals. While we were checking out the Harbor Seals, we noticed an adult Bald Eagle sitting on the sandy portion of the ledge. Then we noticed a couple of immature Bald Eagles as well, and one flew to the other side of the ledge, so we went around to see it. Well we were blown away to find another adult Bald Eagle and 5 other immature Bald Eagles all gathered together! They were feeding on something big, not sure what it was though. After we left Sandy Ledge, we made our to Black Rock and spent some time with two Minke whales. Then we got the word from Capt. Ralph that the Humpback was right between Eastport and Campobello Island. So we made our way back down the passage and spent some time with the Humpback. At one point, the whale surfaced fairly close to the boat, so we quickly shut down our engine so not to scare or put the whale in danger. It swam right under our boat and popped up just on the other side to show us its flukes. Awesome trip! Sorry, I was so into the moment, I forgot to pull my phone out to catch it.

Had yet another amazing trip this afternoon. Headed out the Head Harbor Passage and picked up 3 different Minke whales. We spent some time with them and then got word there was a Humpback whale way off our beaten path. We decided that it was just close enough that we could make it. So we headed out into the Bay and finally made it to the whale. Once there we shut our engine down and watched the whale. The whale even traveled over and said hi to us. Needless to say, our passengers were quite happy. After the whale moved on, we headed back to Eastport. Can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. What a trip we had today! We started it off with a run through the Old Sow Whirlpool, which was turing really well.. Then we got to spend time with at least 5 different Minke whales during our trip, including our friend Stumpy! This was our first time this season seeing Stumpy, so we spent a long time with him. As usual, we also spotted lots of Harbor Porpoise, along with some Harbor Seals, Gray Seals, and a Bald Eagle. Come on out and join the fun. 7/7/24: We had a great day on the water. Our day started with a 3hr deep sea fishing trip. Luckily fog doesn't effect the fishing and everyone on board caught plenty, including a small 28" Halibut, which we returned to the sea. The fog seemed to be holding on tight as we watched the Navy Destroyer leave the Eastport Breakwater and head back to sea. However luck was on our side for the afternoon whale watch, the fog lifted just and time. We got word that there was a Minke whale just a half mile from our slip. We spent some time with that Minke before going over to Sandy ledge to see some Gray Seals. After leaving them, we picked up yet another Minke whale just a short distance away. While watching that whale, yet ANOTHER Minke whale showed up to the party. After viewing those Minkes a while we went to see some Harbor Seals and with more luck on our side, there was an adult Bald Eagle setting on top of the ledge that all the Harbor Seals were on. We then went to check out East Quoddy Lighthouse and then made our way back towards Eastport, with another stop to watch the Minkes we had previously seen. Couldn't ask for a better trip.

We hope everyone is having a great July 4th!

6/28/24: Had a great trip this afternoon. We left the docks and headed for the Old Sow Whirlpool which was turning hard thanks to these big tides we're having. We then made our way out the passage and saw some porpoise, eagles, and then looked at East Quoddy Lighthouse. Then we heard that there was a Minke whale off Dog Island back near the whirlpool. Which was great news because the whales have been very shy the last few days. So we made our way back and got some great looks at the Minke before heading back to the dock. Thank you to everyone that came out with us. And thanks to our friend Capt. Chris for sending out the good news on the radio this afternoon.

6/25/24: We had another rare treat on this afternoon's whale watch when we spent time with a Humpback whale. We usually don't see Humpbacks this early in the season, so we were so happy, and so was all our passengers. We also saw a Minke whale, Gray Seal, Harbor Porpoise, and a Bald Eagle. We still have room on tomorrow's whale watch, so come on out and see some wildlife. Call or stop by the shop to get your tickets. 207-853-2500

6/20/24: It was a hot one today, even on the water. Though there was a nice breeze in the Bay. We got to spend time with a Minke whale this afternoon, even had a close encounter when it surprised us by popping up just a few feet away from the boat. We also saw Harbor Porpoise, Harbor Seals, Gray Seals, Eagles, and lots of Razorbills. Pretty sure we spotted a Greater Shearwater as well. Going to be warm again tomorrow (not as hot as today thank goodness), so come on out with us and see some wildlife. Call or stop by the shop for tickets. 207-853-2500

We had probably our best first trip of the season ever this afternoon! We saw 4, count them, 4 Minke whales. 4 or more Minkes are average for later in the season, but really good for the beginning. Plus we saw something we don't see very often, and that was two of the Minkes paired up and swam with each other. This is rare because Minkes are usually solitary and only are near each other because they happen to feeding on the same school of herring. These two seemed to really enjoy each other's company. The other two Minkes we saw was from a little bit of a distance, but we enjoyed them anyways. We also saw Harbor Porpoise, an adult Bald Eagle keeping an eye on its young one in the nest, and what seemed like a thousand Razorbills. Seriously, there was Razorbills everywhere. Finished our trip with a good ride through the Old Sow whirlpool and then pulled up a lobster trap with a big ol' lobster inside of it. What a great first trip, and we hope it's a good sign of an amazing season ahead.

CORRECTION: Sorry, the whale that passed away in the Steuben area was a Finback whale. No less sad, but wanted to get the correct information out.

Heartbroken to hear the news of the loss of another Minke, this one in the Steuben area. 😥
