We're declaring this month Minke May! 🐳

Minke whales (pronounced "minky") are the least understood whales in the Salish Sea. All month we'll highlight this beautiful baleen species to increase awareness and appreciation. We'll still share plenty of other whale content too, but expect more minke love! 💙 Have you ever seen a minke whale?

Great sightings this weekend

The boys are back in town! Over the windy, rainy weekend, hardy whale watchers were rewarded with looks at several Bigg's killer whales near Victoria, BC. Here we see T19B "Galiano" (born 1995) towering over T60E "Lynx" (born 2008). Will Lynx eventually grow to be as big as Galiano? Only time will tell!

🎶 Do you wanna build a snow...minke?!

Captain Matt Stolmeier of Outer Island Excursions made the most of yesterday's snow day by building a minke whale in his backyard. So good! ☃️🐳

It's ! This energetic little humpback is the 2023 calf of BCX1333 "Ghost". He was born off Hawaii earlier this year and arrived safely in the Salish Sea with mom in late June. He is Ghost's third known calf, and his sibling, Ghost's 2021 calf, has also been seen this season.🐋

Encounter #10 • 21-Mar-2023 • Transients - Sidney Channel
Excerpt: The whales passed the tip of Sidney Spit and were approaching the west end of Forrest Island when they went on a long dive. After five minutes or so, T124A2A came up for a few non-directional surfacings by himself. Then he went down again and T124A2 began surfacing by herself. When T124A2 went back down on a long dive, T124A2B began surfacing. T87 surfaced a couple hundred yards to the northwest but he turned around and came slowly back towards where the T124A2s were milling.
