You may have heard the saying, “A burden heavy to one is borne lightly by many.” This is at the core of the Moose organization and what makes us unique in our Lodges, local communities and charitable “cities” that we support. Our roots can be traced to 1888 and the founder of the Moose, Dr. Henry Wilson, who successfully established the first Lodge in Louisville, Kentucky. In the early years, the

Moose was to serve a modest goal of offering men an opportunity to gather socially, to care for one another’s needs and celebrate life together. 1Since those early years, our fraternal organization rapidly expanded to include valuable service to our communities, care for children and teens in need at Mooseheart Child City & School , a 1,000-acre campus, located 40 miles west of Chicago and care for our senior members at Moosehaven, a 70-acre retirement community near Jacksonville, Florida.2With a combined membership of over 1,000,000 members, our presence is felt in over 1,500 communities across all 50 states and four Canadian provinces, plus Great Britain and Bermuda. The Moose organization contributes between $75 to $100 million worth of community service (counting monetary donations, volunteer hours worked and miles driven) annually. In addition to Mooseheart and Moosehaven, the Moose fraternity’s Heart of the Community effort is multifaceted with internally developed programs like Tommy Moose. Tommy Moose aids in helping children overcome fears and anxiety during times of stress. Donated to law enforcement, fire fighters and other emergency workers, Tommy Moose plush dolls are presented to children in various traumatic situations. The external focus of our service is directed towards many worthwhile national charities, a few of which are: Special Olympics North America, Salvation Army, Safe Surfin’USA Foundation, Big Brothers-Big Sisters, and St. Jude.In our local Lodges, you will find a wide array of activities to participate in both as an individual and as a family. From holiday parties, dances, sports, themed dinners and live entertainment, the Moose has much to offer. Membership can mean different things to different people. You are the one determining what you want to get out of the organization, and what you want to give back. The Moose is about celebrating life together, serving those in need within our local community, supporting our children at Mooseheart and standing by our senior members at Moosehaven.

Where do my Moose Legion dues go? The Moose Legion is known as the Degree of Service. It is made up of male Lodge members who often desire to do a little more for our philanthropic causes of serving Mooseheart & Moosehaven, as well as those seeking another avenue to have fun and enjoy their membership while supporting their lodge. Some refer to it as the “Fun Degree”. All members who hold the Fellowship and Pilgrim degrees are Lodge members first, then Moose Legionnaires before advancing to the honorary degrees. A portion of Moose Legion dues are distributed as follows: • $2.50 to Moosehaven Operations • $2.50 for the Moosehaven Senior Medical Fund • $1.75 for the operation of Mooseheart’s Camp Ross • $3.25 for International Moose Legion Operations Additionally, each jurisdiction donates to our annual Moose Legion projects including: • A designated amount per member toward an annual capital project • A minimum of $0.60 per member toward scholarships awarded at the annual Moose International Youth Awareness Congress Our Moose Legion jurisdictions also provide optional contributions an annual International Moose Legion President’s project and to fund Mooseheart student trips. Of course, we also collect monies and raise funds to support the Mooseheart / Moosehaven Endowment Fund. After all – Moose Legionnaires started it as the “Penny Fund” over a hundred ago. It is easy to see that our Moose Legion dues allotment and our Moose Legion membership activities truly make a difference to our philanthropic endeavors. Moose Legionnaires can all take pride in these accomplishments, as well as many, many other significant contributions to our local lodges and our fraternal programs! Together, we are a mighty group of dedicated fraternalists who strive to “do some good thing for someone each day!”

What makes your chapter valuable? . Every chapter donates to the Scholarship and Maintenance fund. Every senior who graduated last year, which was all of them received a scholarship from the Women of the Moose.
Most every child comes to Mooseheart Child City and School, Inc. with a few items of clothing, maybe a pair of shoes and a jacket in a garbage bag. The women of the Moose provide every child with new clothing, shoes and jackets and a suitcase before they go to their new home with their new friends. We take out the judgment.
Your chapter provides for the music department. Instruments, music stands sheet music. Being a part of the band teaches the students to be a part of something. It teaches social skills. It allows self-expression and cognitive skills.
The beauty shop at Moosehaven. Our seniors like to look nice also. They can go to the beauty shop and get a new hairdo or freshen up the normal hairdo. Looking nice makes you feel energized and fresh.
Think about the things that you use on a daily basis. Your chapter provides daily needs for BOTH campuses.
The women of the Moose provided the new gymnasium at the Mooseheart school.
We provide occupational and physical therapy when needed on both campuses.
We supply both campuses with pharmacy needs.
We provide for vision, hearing and dental needs.
We provide a Christmas party and presents on both campuses.
Have you ever seen the pier that goes out into the St. Johns River? The women of the Moose have rebuilt that several times. Our seniors love fishing on that pier.
Community service efforts are greatly appreciated and very much encouraged. But remember why we are moose, to take care of our children and our seniors.
Thanks to all the chapters who continue to support our first and foremost philanthropic endeavors.
Good luck to all the new officers of the ensuing year.
