Mom's Away So the Lambs Will Play!!
One of the best sights during lambing is the Mad Dash! Unsupervised and feeling their freedom, the lambs just start running!! It is so funny and adorable!
It's "Pumpkin Fest" time of year on the farm. Later than regular pumpkin fests, but that's when we get the best deals ;) Sheep love pumpkins, and we heard this year that they actually help the sheep control parasites - which would be great if true! Added bonus, we usually end up with a couple "volunteer" pumpkin patches scattered on the farm the next year!
Come see us for a nice, HOT breakfast at the Dubuque Winter Market this morning until noon! We sold out of everything last weekend so come early to make sure you get your preferred combo! We have a limited supply of meats, and most of our sheep milk cheeses.
Located at the corner if 11th and Central with a big blue feather flag at the door!
We're here at The Territory Farmers Market this morning until noon despite the gloomy weather! Grab a nice hot breakfast sandwich made with an Icelandic lamb sausage patty, some frozen lamb to take home, or some warm Icelandic yarn to knit or crochet this winter!
Violet and Her Mischief Maker
After the lambs running and playing, this is the next best thing! It's always a treat when we get to see the lambs climbing on mom - even more so when mom stands up and the lamb manages to stay on for a little bit! It was just happy coincidence that I had the camera when Violet's little man decided to use her as a jungle gym.
We are (again) way behind on new lambs pictures - yes we're still going! But hopefully we'll get them out soon!
Ready to Run
A new video! More lambs, more playing, more moms yelling! These lambs are all ages and sizes - from a day to 2.5 weeks, from 5 lbs to 13 lbs. It's the best part of lambing, watching them run and play and learn from each other.
New Spring, New Lambs
Before we get to new lamb pictures, I thought I'd post a video for your viewing pleasure. Keep in mind that I'm much more comfortable with pictures than I am with video! The crazy running spotted lamb is one of the first born this year - the older ones are always the troublemakers!
The ewes in this pasture are our pregnant polled ewes and all the ewes who have had lambs so far. Later in the video you can see sheep in an adjacent pen - these are the one winter ewes, some of whom are bred. The horned flock has barely started yet and are about the same size as this group, so we have TONS more to go!!
Fall Shearing 2016
A nice clip of Brian shearing one of our Icelandic ewes. Sorry it ends abruptly (had to go grab the next victim!). Brian shears a little different than our usual shearer David but he does a great job!
