Be Bear Aware 🐻

Black bears in Rocky Mountain National Park are waking up from their winter slumber and looking for food!

Keep all food within an arm's reach and never leave food or scented items unattended. When available, use bear lockers to store all food and scented items (lip balm, lotion, soaps, toothpaste, hand wipes, hand sanitizer, anything with a scent).
𝗡𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗮 𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁!

One of the best ways to protect bears, and your vehicle, is by locking vehicle doors at all times. Bears have an excellent sense of smell and they will try to open a vehicle to search for food.
- Do not leave food or coolers in the back of pickup trucks.
- Remember, pickup truck topper shells and bed covers 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗡𝗢𝗧 stop a bear from entering the back of a vehicle to look for food.

Beautiful

For much of the winter, the winds howl up here on the eastern edge of Rocky Mountain National Park. Today is another one of those blustery days. I always find it difficult to convey the winds in my photographs, but I feel like this one does a pretty good job, especially if you pay attention to the flag. Be sure to view this as large as you can.

This is the Beaver Meadows Entrance Station with Sprague Mountain and Stones Peak in the background.

One of my favorite memories RMNP is of a ranger guided snow shoe hike

Winter is a spectacular time to visit Rocky Mountain National Park. There's something for everyone, including hiking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, wildlife viewing and more!

Winter recreation in the Rockies does take a little extra planning. Take time to look up the weather forecast and make sure you have packed the clothing and gear needed to have fun and be safe during a wintertime visit.

Some things to pack include warm layers of clothes, hat, gloves/mittens, warm wool socks, waterproof boots, waterproof and wind-proof jacket, snowshoes or traction devices for the bottom of your boots, hiking poles, sunglasses, goggles, sunscreen, snacks, and plenty of water.

Winter made an appearance on the peaks, we had a hail storm down here at mile high elevations. Moisture so welcomed.

The end of September and early October mark the arrival of winter in the Rockies. Park roads can temporarily close at anytime due to inclement weather and road conditions.

Trail Ridge Road is temporarily closed at Rainbow Curve on the east side of Rocky Mountain National Park and at the Colorado River Trailhead on the west side of the park due to snow and ice accumulation on the road.

Old Fall River Road is also temporarily closed.
