I was asked if Garcinia cambogia was good or bad, I'm assuming for weight loss (as seen on Dr. Oz...ugh) and instead of my pat answer which would have been nothing will overcome the basic science of calories in and calories out (quality over quantity), I thought I'd do some research and found this great review of the latest studies available:

http://bucatiniforever.files.wordpress.com/2013/03/concetti-base-nutrizione-e-sport.pdf

"HCA (Garcinia cambogia) is a nutrient that has been hypothesized to increase fat oxidation by inhibiting citrate lyase and lipogenesis. Theoretically, this may lead to greater fat burning and weight loss over time. Although there is some evidence that HCA may increase
fat metabolism in animal studies, there is little to no evidence showing that HCA supplementation affects body composition in humans. For example, Ishihara et al. reported that HCA supplementation spared carbohydrate utilization and promoted
lipid oxidation during exercise in mice. However, Kriketos and associates reported that HCA supplementation (3 g/d for 3 days) did not affect resting or post-exercise energy expenditure or markers of lipolysis in healthy men. Likewise, Heymsfield
and coworkers reported that HCA supplementation (1.5 g/d for 12 weeks) while maintaining a low-fat, high-fiber diet did not promote greater weight or fat loss than subjects on placebo. Finally, Mattes and colleagues reported that HCA supplementation
(2.4 g/d for 12 weeks) did not affect appetite, energy intake, or weight loss. These findings suggest that HCA supplementation does not appear to promote fat loss in humans."

While we're on the topic of plastics... Here's a great chart showing what products are made from which plastic resins. Absolutely avoid #'s 1, 3 & 6. Better yet, avoid them all and go with glass or stainless steel. If you do use a #7 BPA-free water bottle, make sure you only fill it with cold liquid and never leave it filled for long.

Get rid of your plastic storage containers that leach PCB's and phalates into your food. Pyrex glass storage containers are 50% OFF at Fred Meyers through 3/30/13. What a deal!

Looking for a way to eat more veggies? If you're already my patient, you've probably heard this. If not, give it a try!

"Bulk Blanching" vegetables gives you ready to use veggies that you can eat cold on salads or throw into a stir-fry for a quick meal when time is short.

Put a large pot of water on to boil as you cut up a bunch of carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, green beans or whatever you like. Add them to the boiling water for 3 minutes as you prepare another pot of ice water. Strain the veggies and immediately immerse in the cold water for 5 minutes as you clean up. Drain, refrigerate, and eat within 5 to 7 days.

I just made this and fell IN LOVE, so I thought I would share! I think this would pair nice with a meaty with fish like halibut.

Carrots with Fennel and Toasted Hazelnuts
1 lb rainbow carrots, peeled, trimmed, and cup into 3/4 in coins
1 small fennel bulb, trimmed, cored, and cut into 3/4 in slices
2T olive oil
1t salt
1T sherry
1t honey
1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika (my new favorite spice!)
15 roasted hazelnuts chopped

In a large saute pan, heat the olive oil over medium heat, Add the carrots and season with salt. Cook for 10 minutes then add the fennel. Stir well to combine. Continue to cook, stirring occasionally at first and more frequently as the pan begins to brown. When the carrots are tender, add the sherry and honey to the pan and stir well until it has almost evaporated. Sprinkle the paprika over the vegetables and stir for just a few seconds to incorporate the spice and release its flavor. Remove the pan from the heat and let it cool for a minute. Transfer to a serving dish and garnish with toasted hazelnuts (or just add the hazelnuts toss before serving). You can skip the honey for a more savory dish.

ENJOY!

This morning I posted tips on how to remember to drink more water but I've decided that I did not emphasize (for smartphone users) how effective a water application on your phone is! I've successfully hit 96oz/day using Water Your Body (Droid) and I know I wouldn't have without it. I'm looking for an IPhone app to recommend. Please let me know if you find a good one. Thanks!

Drinking enough water is one of the most important and easiest things we can do to nourish our body and improve our overall well being. Do you drink enough water on a regular basis? Ideally, you would drink at least half your body weight in ounces of water and more when you exercise.

Are you having trouble remembering to drink enough water? Here are some of my favorite tips!

1. Drink 16oz of water at waking every day. Refill the cup in in the kitchen so you'll be more likely to drink some every time you see it.
2. Get a water bottle to carry around that you don't have to open. Flip straws make it easier to drink more water.
3. If you sit at a desk at home or office each day, get a 32oz wide mouth glass jar and drink one before lunch and one after lunch.
4. Download an application like Water Your Body to give you reminders to drink water throughout the day!

With my patients, I have found that above all else, stress is the biggest obstacle to cure. Lack of a personal organizational system and consistently feeling overwhelmed are huge contributors to daily stress. Would you agree in your life?

I recently found a book that has cleared my head like never before! I highly recommend reading it. If you do, please let me know what you think!

Getting Things Done is a time management method, described in a book of the same title by productivity consultant David Allen. It is often referred to as GTD.

Take back control of what you eat!! "You shouldn't be buying garlic shipping in the hulls of ships from thousands of miles away packed between s*x toys and flip flops."

Spend an hour and revolutionize the way you think about and buy the food you eat. Buy local from CSA's and Farmer's Markets and support sustainable farming practices in this country. A must see documentary featuring many local Oregon farms. Bon Appetite!

“Alice’s Wonder Spray” All-Purpose Cleaner (homemade 409)

Mix 4 tbsp. vinegar with 2 tsp. borax in the bottom of a 32 oz. spray bottle. Fill the rest of the bottle with very hot filtered water. Shake to dissolve borax. Add ¼ cup liquid detergent or ½ cup liquid soap last, then scent with 30 to 40 drops of your favorite essential oil.

From Clean House, Clean Planet: Clean Your House Safely for Pennies a Day by Karen Logan

For detergent, use Dr. Bronner's Sal Suds, or if you want cleaning power and scent all in one, try one of their scented liquid soaps. One spray bottle lasts me close to a year! And most of my original supplies came with me from California. Now that's a good deal! I also make dish soap with Dr. Bronner's Almond soap and water (2T per cup). It smells great, is inexpensive, and environmentally friendly. ENJOY!
