James is an internationally renowned, Montana-based photographer focused on the built environment and the life surrounding it. He is currently an artist-in-residence at Tippet Rise Art Center, working on a long-term project documenting the unique changes of nature, climate, and time in relation to architecture and landscape. The countdown to concert season continues with artist profiles for Week Four, with performances from September 6, 7, and 8.

On Friday, September 6, we are delighted to welcome back pianist and longtime friend of Tippet Rise Anne-Marie McDermott for her fourth concert appearance, leading an all-Beethoven program with three different instrumentations. McDermott, artistic director of Bravo! Vail Music Festival and a member of Lincoln Center’s Chamber Music Society, will perform Beethoven’s 32 Piano Variations in C Minor on an Original Theme. Returning artist and cellist Christopher Costanza, a longtime member of the St. Lawrence String Quartet, will join for Beethoven’s Seven Variations on a Theme from Mozart's Magic Flute for Cello and Piano. Making his Tippet Rise debut, violinist Chad Hoopes, winner of First Prize at the Young Artists Division of the Yehudi Menuhin International Violin Competition and a 2017 recipient the Avery Fischer Career Grant, will perform Sonata for Violin and Piano No. 7 in C Minor, Op. 30 No. 2 alongside McDermott.

The Saturday concert on September 7 marks the Tippet debut of two multi-faceted artists – Grammy-nominated violinist Tessa Lark and classical and jazz harpist Charles Overton. Tessa Lark, consistently praised by critics and audiences for her astounding range of sounds, technical agility, and musical elegance, is also a highly acclaimed fiddler in the tradition of her native Kentucky. Charles Overton is a frequent performer with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Boston Pops, as well as jazz clubs throughout the northeast. He aims to create a musical environment that is accessible, exciting, and resonates deeply with audiences. Lark and Overton are performers, arrangers, and composers of a program including early romantic virtuoso music by Camille Saint-Saëns, Eugène Ysaÿe, and Jean Cras; a traditional fiddle work “Boy in the Gap”; and the Morgan Lewis jazz standard "How High the Moon". Their performance will conclude with a trip to Argentina for Astor Piazzolla’s Histoire du Tango.

Week Four concludes on Sunday, September 8 with Baroque Music Montana who is well-known throughout the region for their engaging presentations of chamber music inspired by history. We are thrilled to welcome several members of the chamber group to Tippet Rise for their concert debut, including founder and baroque violinist Carrie Krause; Nate Helgeson, performing on the dulcian, a predecessor to the modern-day bassoon; and John Lenti, playing the theorbo, a guitar-like instrument. Their performance will feature 17th century music by Italian, German, and Spanish composers intermingled with informative and lively explanations and unique insights into the oldest music of the 2024 season.

Mieczysław Weinberg’s Sonata for Two Violins, Op. 69 was performed live by Gidon Kremer and Madara Pētersone at Tippet Rise Art Center on August 20, 2023. The duo also recorded the sonata for a 2020 album release as part of Gidon Kremer’s dedication to the rediscovery and cultivation of Weinberg's music.

Join actor and MSU professor Dr. Ben Leubner for a one hour recital of two pieces of 20th century literature at Tippet Rise on Sunday, August 4. Beginning outdoors at 𝘟𝘺𝘭𝘦𝘮, Leubner will recite Elizabeth Bishop’s 1971 dramatic monologue “Crusoe in England,” followed by an excerpt from Virginia Woolf’s 1931 lyrical novel, 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘞𝘢𝘷𝘦𝘴, performed in the Olivier Music Barn.

Ben Leubner has taught literature at Montana State University since 2009. His own research focuses mainly on modernist fiction and 20th century poetry. Outside of the classroom, he has performed in several productions with Montana InSite Theatre, Bozeman Actors Theatre, and Montana TheatreWorks.

Site Sounds Opus 16, No. 1 documents ninety minutes of Montana’s big sky. While the tall grass sways in the breeze, the audio begs the question of place as it mimics waves crashing on the beach.

The Site Sounds project provides a unique perspective of the 12,500 acre ranch and campus while sharing locations off the hiking and biking trail system, varied flora and fauna, and changing seasons and weather patterns. The landscapes and soundscapes offer a chance to see Montana's rugged life cycle while also affording time to relax, meditate, or study the ecosystem on the micro and macro level.

We are on the countdown for concert season! And with five weeks until season nine begins, we are highlighting the amazing artists coming to visit and perform at the art center, starting with our Week Five artists.

Pianist and composer Julien Brocal returns to Tippet Rise on August 13 in a special program which alternates between his own compositions and works by John Luther Adams. Julien Brocal is a longtime friend of the art center, having spent several weeks in residency to record his 2018 album 𝘙𝘦𝘧𝘭𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴. We are delighted to welcome him back for his third concert season appearance.

As part of Tippet Rise’s 𝘞𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳 series on August 14, this concert will take place among works of art located on the art center’s Cottonwood Campus, including 𝘐𝘳𝘰𝘯 𝘛𝘳𝘦𝘦 by Ai Weiwei and 𝘋𝘢𝘺𝘥𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘮𝘴 and 𝘊𝘶𝘳𝘴𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘛𝘢𝘬𝘦𝘴 𝘢 𝘏𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘥𝘢𝘺 by Patrick Dougherty. Performing together as a group, returning flutist Jessica Sindell will be joined by debuting artists including oboist Tamer Edlebi, clarinetist Afendi Yusuf, bassoonist Jake Thonis, and horn player Nathaniel Silberschlag, offering a unique opportunity to hear these talented musicians outside their orchestral settings. The group will take the audience on a trip to Hungary, Argentina, and back to the United States with music by György Ligeti, Endre Szervánszky, Astor Piazzolla, and Samuel Barber.

The concert season at Tippet Rise concludes on August 15 with a debut performance by cellist Camille Thomas alongside returning pianist Julien Brocal. Frequent collaborators, the two will play a mixed program of works by Chopin and August Franchomme, composers who were not only contemporaries during the early 19th century, but also close friends. We are delighted to welcome them both back, and excited for a new project that he and Camille Thomas recorded at Tippet Rise this year.

Mozart’s Piano Sonata No. 8 is one of only two piano sonatas Mozart wrote in a minor key, but we were lucky to have it performed by a major musician when Richard Goode returned to Tippet Rise on September 1, 2023.

Fourteen years after her victory at the XVI International Chopin Piano Competition, Yulianna Avdeeva - pianist documents her journey with the music of Frédéric Chopin. Voyage focuses on his late works, all composed while surrounded by nature, and Avdeeva has recorded them at the rustic Tippet Rise Art Center in Montana, against the serene backdrop of the Beartooth Mountains.

Celebrated Ukrainian composer Valentyn Silvestov wrote Four Pieces for Piano, Op. 302 (2020) and Geniushene delivered it to the Tippet Rise audience with the passion for which the Russian-born pianist is renowned. Today we hosted guests for the first of our 2024 Geo-Paleo Tours, offered in collaboration with our partners from the Yellowstone Bighorn Research Association (YBRA). Participants learned about the various geological and paleontological features scattered across the art center. It’s always humbling to understand the changes of this land over geologic time.

On August 3rd, large-format film photographer James Florio – Tippet Rise’s longtime collaborator and artist-in-residence – presents a screening of the film 𝘑𝘢𝘮𝘦𝘴 𝘍𝘭𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘰 𝘢𝘵 𝘛𝘪𝘱𝘱𝘦𝘵 𝘙𝘪𝘴𝘦. The 17-minute documentary explores the radical landscape of Tippet Rise. It was such a pleasure to host Montana InSite Theatre at Tippet Rise for the third annual “Shakespeare on the Rise”. This year’s walking production of “Animal Encounters” moved the audience between several different artworks and locations where actors performed scenes, monologues, and songs that explored Shakespeares many references to animal life within his plays. Many thanks to the amazing actors of Montana InSite Theatre for this special program!

We began releasing Aizuri Quartet’s 2022 concert films last year starting with the first movement of Robert Schumann’s Opus 41 - the third in a trio of string quartets he wrote in the spring of 1842, dedicated to his friend Felix Mendelssohn, and premiered as a present for his wife Clara on her 23rd birthday.

Today, we close out that series of releases with the second movement from the String Quartet No. 1 in A Minor, Op. 41, No. 1 performed on September 23rd, 2022 in the Olivier Music Barn at Tippet Rise. Enjoy!

For the third year in a row, our Art Education and Visitor Center Manager, Beth Korth, hosted a Teaching Artist Program for a group of 15 - 20 women currently incarcerated at the Montana Women’s Prison as part of an ongoing program with the Yellowstone Art Museum (YAM). Beth led the women in a workshop exploring wet felting – when raw wool fibers are layered together to create individual different designs and patterns. The pieces were then fastened together into a collective tapestry which is now on display at the Billings Library. The Tippet Rise Fund is proud to support this program and we are so appreciative to the YAM for their leadership, and to the participants from the Montana Women’s Prison for their willingness to express themselves through art.

Sir Stephen Hough performed Claude Debussy’s Estampes at Tippet Rise Art Center on August 18, 2023. The composition is described as impressionistic, though Debussy did not consider himself an impressionist. Regardless, everyone in the Olivier Music Barn was incredibly impressed with Hough’s rendition of the piece. Enjoy the full performance on the films page of our website or on our YouTube channel.
