UPDATE: Thank you all so much for helping to spread the word about the importance of not disturbing sea turtles, including the use of flash photography and lights. The photo was sent to the Sea Turtle Stranding Network by an anonymous tourist who was concerned for the safety of the loggerhead sea turtle on Friday, July 5th.

A team leader from Share the Beach (a volunteer sea turtle conservation group) immediately arrived at the scene. By that time, the sea turtle was already back in the Gulf. The team leader educated the tourists on the proper way to behave around nesting sea turtles.

No person may take, harass, harm, pursue, hunt, shoot, wound, kill, trap, or capture any marine turtle, turtle nest, and/or eggs, or attempt to engage in such conduct.

Any person who knowingly violates any provision of this act may be assessed a civil penalty up to $25,000 or a criminal penalty up to $100,000 and up to one year imprisonment.

ORIGINAL POST: This sea turtle attempted to nest on an Alabama beach last night. However, the crowd of people and flashing lights deterred her from finding a suitable spot. Instead, she went back into the water, keeping her eggs with her. When you see a nesting sea turtle, leave it alone. Give her plenty of room and do not use lights or flash photography. Their survival DEPENDS on it!

May is shaping up to be a busy month along our beachfront, with events like NCAA Beach Volleyball and the Hangout Music Festival. We want to make our residents and guests aware of some necessary public parking and beach access adjustments that will take place before and during these events:

𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝗔𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗹 𝟮𝟵
• The Gulf Place parking lot in front of the Hangout will be closed to vehicular traffic.

𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝗠𝗮𝘆 𝟲
• East Gulf Place parking lot "Resident Parking" closed through Thursday, May 23.

𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝗠𝗮𝘆 𝟭𝟯
• Public Parking at Gulf Place closes.

• Public beach access at Gulf Place closes.

𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝗠𝗮𝘆 𝟭𝟯
• Hwy 59 south of W. 1st Ave. and Hwy 182/Beach Blvd between W. 2nd St. and E. 2nd St. will be closed to all vehicular/pedestrian traffic.
- Access to West Beach: Available through Windmill Ridge Rd (preferred), W. 1st Ave. to W. 3rd St. or by taking W. 2nd Ave.
- Access to Orange Beach: Available through the Gulf State Park, Canal Rd., or by taking E. 1st Ave. to E. 2nd St., E. 3rd St., or E. 4th St.

• Traffic flow on E. 1st Ave. and E. 2nd Ave. will be modified to a one-way-only route to help accommodate heavy pedestrian traffic. Two-way traffic flow on E. 1st St., E. 2nd St., E. 3rd St., and E. 4th St. will remain.
- The public is advised to utilize the traffic flow map and directional signage posted in these areas indicating proper traffic flow during this time.

𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝗠𝗮𝘆 𝟮𝟬
• At 6 a.m., Hwy 59 and Hwy 182/Beach Blvd will temporarily reopen to allow for exiting traffic to flow north on Hwy 59.

𝗧𝘂𝗲𝘀𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝗠𝗮𝘆 𝟮𝟭
• All normal traffic conditions resume.

𝗧𝗵𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝗠𝗮𝘆 𝟮𝟯
• All public beach parking and access points will return to normal use.

Today at around 11:00 am, we received a call regarding a swimmer in distress in the 4000 block of Highway 180. Three units from the Fort Morgan Fire Department responded and found three swimmers approximately 125 yards offshore. Our remote-controlled water rescue device, the Dolphin 1, which was purchased through donations, was deployed and rescued two swimmers, bringing them to shore. The Sheriff's Department also deployed their water rescue equipment and saved one swimmer.

The City of Gulf Shores would like to make all residents and visitors aware of the following road closures and detours related to the 50th Annual National Shrimp Festival on October 12-15.

𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝗖𝗹𝗼𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀/𝗗𝗲𝘁𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀:
• The West Gulf Place parking lot will close to the public beginning Monday, October 9, to be utilized for tent and food vendor setup.
• Highway 59 will be closed at 1st Avenue beginning Tuesday, October 10.
• Highway 182 (Gulf Beach Boulevard) will be closed to the public between East 1st Street and West 3rd Street, in front of Gulf Place Public Beach, beginning Tuesday, October 10.
• East Gulf Place (Resident Parking Lot) will be closed to the public beginning Thursday, October 12, and will be utilized as vendor parking and shuttle location.
• Eastbound traffic toward Orange Beach should consider using Highway 180 East or State Park Road Highway 135 as alternate routes.

𝗦𝗵𝘂𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻:
There will be a Park and Ride Shuttle Service available to those attending the Shrimp Festival. Transportation Wristbands for the shuttle will be available for $5.00 per day. Wristbands entitle the holder to unlimited rides to and from the festival grounds on the day of purchase. Per state law, children under the age of 5 are not allowed on the shuttle buses. All proceeds from the shuttle service go to the Gulf Shores City Schools’ Dolphin Athletic Club and Band Booster Club.

𝗦𝗵𝘂𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗹𝗲:
• Thursday, October 12: 1:30 p.m. - 10:15 p.m.

We can't wait for the 𝐇𝐚𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐇𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝟓𝐊, 𝐅𝐮𝐧 𝐑𝐮𝐧, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐖𝐢𝐭𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐞𝐥𝐬 ride coming up on 𝗦𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟮𝟭! 💀
🧙The night will kick-off at the Gulf Place Public Beach Town Green with a DJ spinning some spooky tunes! Witches will take their brooms (or bikes) for a ride to remember at 6pm followed by the Fun Run at 6:30pm. The main event, the Haunted Hustle 5K, will begin shortly after at 7:10 p.m.
🧛‍♂️For those who do not wish to participate in the Haunted Hustle 5K, Fun Run, or Witches on Wheels, we still encourage you to come out in your favorite Halloween costume to watch the parade and catch all the throws from our exclusive viewing area! Come enjoy spending time with friends and family, listen to our live DJ, kids activity area, and enjoy festivities we have lined up starting at 4 p.m.

Proceeds to benefit the Dolphin Foundation for Education and Arts.
