Views like these make backpacking in the Nantahala National Forest a no brainer! This gorgeous forest is full of soaring granite cliffs and dozens of waterfalls. The valley is criscrossed by a network of well-maintained trails and backcountry campgrounds, making it the perfect spot for beginner and experienced backpackers alike.

Friday the 13th, you say? 😳 Don't worry, you don't have to avoid black cats and broken mirrors to avoid back luck on the trail! Good luck on a hike starts with being prepared with the right gear. Before your next trip, make sure you have the following in your bag (otherwise, you'll risk more than 7 years of bad luck!)
First Aid Kit - Accidents can happen to anyone (thats why they're called accidents)! Bring a lightweight but well stocked first aid kit. Consider the amount of people you are caring for, as well as your first aid training. Don't bring gear that you don't know how to use!
Water and Water Filter - Bring at least 1 Liter of water for every hour of hiking (more if its hot, humid, or strenuous). If you're hiking in an area with water sources, consider a small water filter like the Sawyer or Lifestraw to refill your supplies in an emergency.
Rain Gear - Expect the unexpected. Rain and thunderstorms are common in the mountains and in certain parts of the country, especially during the summer. Bring a rainjacket and pack cover, or at least a small emergency poncho to protect you and year gear.

Staying Dry in the Backcountry ⛈ While sunny summer days are just around the corner, staying dry in the backcountry can still be a huge challenge! From summer rainstorms to water crossings, here's our favorite tips for staying dry on your next hike:

💧 Come prepared: summer storms are common, especially where World's Best Adventures hikes in the Southeast. Don't forget your rainjacket/poncho, waterproof pack cover, and liner (we use a garbage bag 😉) to keep yourself and your gear dry!
💧 Choose the right gear: If you're expecting intense storms and cold weather, invest in waterproofed and insulated jackets. Expecting fair or only sporadic rain? A light poncho can do just fine!
💧 remember, "Cotton Kills" -AVOID cotton clothing which retains moisture and takes long to dry (risking discomfort or hypothermia! 😰)

Choosing a perfect backpacking campsite is vital for not just YOUR safety, but the safety of the ecosystem around you! ➡️ Don't forget these 4 tips for picking your next campsite:

⛺️ Choose Durable Surfaces: Where possible, always camp in established campsites instead of creating a new one, and choose a site where you won't trample vegitation, like rock and dirt.
⛺️ Set up camp well away from streams and lakes to avoid contaminating the water or eroding the fragile ecosystem.
⛺️ Look Up! 👀 Check that there are no dead trees or branches hanging over your site waiting to fall!
⛺️ Avoid unwanted neighbors - Animal neighbors can cause serious havoc on your campsite. Check your site for insects, snakes, and plants that might draw animals, like berry bushes in bear habitat!

With literally thousands of options to choose from, picking the perfect backcountry or camping tent can easily overwhelm! But don't stress! Whether you're shopping for your very first backpacking tent, or looking to upgrade, consider these 4 tips to pick the perfect tent:

⛺️ Car Camping vs Backpacking Tents: Traditional Car Camping tents are much heavier and typically provide better insulation from the elements, with more features like windows, covered vestibules and storage areas. Backpacking tents are typically constructed with an even balance of weight, durability, and protection in mind, and typically favor materials with a high strength-to-weight ratio. Backpacking tents typically also pack down to a much smaller size than typical car camping tents, so they are easily carried in a backpack.
⛺️ Backpacking tents usually fit 1-3 people. While a larger tent means extra storage space, it also means a lot of extra weight. When backpacking, consider a tent that fits the exact number of people who need it - you'll be glad for the lighter pack!
⛺️ Three Season Tents are designed for use during the Spring, Summer, and Fall, while Four Season Tents are designed for year-round use.
