Today we're celebrating an important day - the first time I use my new 13 in 1 Instant Pot. This is one of their recipes. It's something from Rao's Restaurant in NYC. It doesn't have a name so I'm calling it Arby's, because it has all the meats - pork, beef, meatballs, 2 kinds of Italian sausage.

I got a chance to see the Blank Slate Monument today. It's traveling around the nation and stopped in Galveston at the Rosenberg Library.

The monument symbolizes the African American experience before, during, and after the Civil War.

On the bottom, a slave is crouched on the ground in chains and rags. A black Union soldier stands on top of him. One foot crushes the slave's face into the ground while the slave's bound hand holds up the soldier's other foot.

The soldier holds a battle-torn Union flag and a "memory jug" - an American folk art item that honors the dead through the items that embellish it. A lynching rope is wrapped around the soldier's neck.

Above the soldier is a free woman and mother - a social justice activist. She stands, again, with one foot on the head of the soldier below, and the other being supported by the soldier's hand that also holds the flag.

The woman holds a lantern and a placard. The placard is connected to a local wifi network so you can put whatever message you want on it. I couldn't think of anything profound so I just put "Galveston Home of Juneteenth".

On top of the woman is a small child - the future generations whose freedom has been bought by the slave, the soldier, and the activist.

It's really quite a powerful thing to see.

The blank slate monument was created by Kwame Akoto-Bamfo, a Ghanaian artist who also created the outdoor sculpture “Nkyinkyim Installation,” dedicated to the memory of the victims of the Transatlantic slave trade, on display at the National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgomery, Alabama.
