It was a math and geometry kind of day in lower elementary yesterday!

Material Highlight: Teen Boards! (Children's House)
The child is introduced to the Teens Boards: two boards consisting of 9 total spaces with the numeral 10 printed on it, and a set of numeral cards from 1-9 that slide into the slot and cover the zero of the tens. Similar to when they were introduced to the quantities, they are shown the 10 and 1 come together to make 11. The child also places the beads corresponding the number using the decimal system, tens and units, next to the wooden materials.

Our upper elementary classes are working in groups on a project where they create their own island nation complete with a full profile of the geography, flora and fauna, culture, government, society and more! This group decided to make their map under the supervision of our woodworking teacher.

The Great Story presentations have begun in Lower Elementary! Montessori begins the school year with Great Stories that give a framework for the lessons and materials that the child explores during the year. In Montessori, elementary children are free to express their learning in ways that go beyond tests. This student (or should I say future physician?!) made clay models of key organs of the human body and presented her research to the class at the conclusion of her project.

One of our upper elementary students noticed that Rango's vest wasn't fitting him properly, so she decided to take his measurements and make her own for him! Rango loved it, and the class went outside to see his test run of his new fit!

A huge thank you to Zach Eyde for coming to give STEAM presentations to our Children's House and Lower Elementary today! The children's house had so much fun learning about how to make marble roller coasters and learning about force and energy, and the elementary are sure to go home and try to get an electric charge from their produce drawers and pantries!

Two of our lower elementary students chose to communicate what they learned in their research on early humans through a play. They researched the information, wrote the script, cast the parts, and directed the play entirely independently. Their friends eagerly supported their work by joining in the play or cheering them on from the audience.
