The Corded Olive is a highly sought after shell that we rarely find in our area. This pristine specimen is an excellent example of why it’s called a corded OLIVE because you could clearly see the cord like design wrapped across the center of the Shell. So many unusual and rare shells to be found in the 10,000 islands. We’d love to have you join us on a tour and find your special shell.

Flat Scallops are a find to be celebrated! You may ask yourself, “where does the animal live if the shell is flat?” The answer is the other side of the shell is extra large and has an even more exaggerated concave opening to make room for the animal.
At first glance it appears to be just another Florida Fighting Conch, however closely exam the tip, (apex or spire), you may notice that there is some growth malformation. Just as in humans, shellfish also experience genetic malformations. It is very rare to find a shell with such an anomaly and part of what makes it even more special is that the anomalies are usually one of a kind. So if you find a common shell that has an anomaly, you should treasure it because it is special!!

Every once in a while, we get a special treat and the curious comes by for a visit! This encounter was even more exciting because this mommy Manatee had a calf with her! Here are a few facts about the Manatee:
1. **Endangered Species:** The Florida manatee, also known as the West Indian manatee, is classified as an endangered species due to factors like habitat loss, watercraft collisions, and cold stress syndrome.
2. **Gentle Giants:** These gentle giants can weigh up to 1,200 pounds and reach lengths of over 10 feet. Despite their size, they are herbivores, primarily feeding on seagrasses and aquatic plants.
3. **Slow Movers:** Manatees are notoriously slow swimmers, typically moving at speeds of around 5 miles per hour, although they can sprint up to 15 miles per hour in short bursts.
4. **Warm Water Seekers:** Manatees are sensitive to cold temperatures and migrate to warmer waters during the winter months. They rely on natural springs and warm-water outflows from power plants to survive during colder periods.
5. **Social Creatures:** These marine mammals are generally solitary animals but can be found in small groups, especially during the mating season or when seeking warmer waters. They are known for their curious and friendly nature, often approaching boats and swimmers.

Low tide shelling it never disappoints in the 10,000 Islands. Follow your guides advice because they are out there every single day. Mother nature does the best she can, as do we, by taking you out at the best tide for the day (which changes daily).

Chitons are marine mollusks with a unique appearance, resembling a small armored tank. They have a shell composed of eight overlapping plates, giving them flexibility and protection. Chitons graze on algae and other organic matter using a specialized tongue-like structure called a radula. They’re found in oceans worldwide, often clinging to rocks or other shells in intertidal zones.

Periwinkle snails are fascinating creatures! Did you know they are highly adaptable to different environments, from rocky shores to salt marshes? They’re also herbivores, munching on algae and other plant matter. Plus, they’re known for their unique ability to survive both in and out of water, thanks to their gills and operculum, a sort of trapdoor-like structure that seals their shell.

So many times people overlook bi-valves. Always in search of the rare highly sought after univalves. But beauty lies in all shells. Colors, shapes and growth lines are all traits that can make the ordinary, extraordinary! So next time you’re on the beach, open your mind to all beauty before you! Happy and hope to see ya’ll out there.

To me nothing is more rewarding than finding that elusive shell. Whether it’s a shark’s eye, lightning whelk, or my personal favorite the Alphabet Cone. Check out the cool pattern on this “Alphie”. Instead of shapes mimicking letters it has beautiful vertical lines. You just never know what you’re gonna find in the 10,000 islands.

Unlike most gastropods that coil to the right, the lightning welk’s shell spirals to the left, which is a rare trait in nature . Lightning welks are carnivorous predators, primarily feeding on bivalves like clams and mussels. They use their specialized radula, a tongue-like organ with tiny teeth, to drill into the shells of their prey. These fascinating creatures are found along the Atlantic coast of North America, ranging from North Carolina to Florida. Lightning welks can grow to impressive sizes, with their shells reaching lengths of up to 20 inches (50 centimeters). They inhabit shallow coastal waters, often burying themselves in sand or mud substrates.Female lightning welks lay clusters of eggs, which they attach to hard surfaces such as rocks or pilings.
Lightning welks play a crucial role in controlling populations of bivalves, which helps maintain the balance of marine ecosystems.

What happened here? Our best guess is a predator attacked this urchin but somehow he survived! He is safely back in the water now. Here are some Urchin facts:1. Urchins live in shallow and deep water2. Spines: Sea urchins’ spines serve multiple purposes, including protection against predators, locomotion, and capturing food particles. These spines are movable and can be quite sharp.3. Feeding: Sea urchins are primarily herbivores, feeding on algae, seaweed, and other plant matter. Some species are omnivorous or carnivorous, consuming small invertebrates and detritus.4. Tube feet: Like other echinoderms, sea urchins possess tube feet, which they use for locomotion, feeding, and respiration. These tube feet are operated by a water vascular system unique to echinoderms.5. Reproduction: Sea urchins reproduce both sexually and asexually. They release eggs and sperm into the water for external fertilization. The fertilized eggs develop into larvae, which undergo metamorphosis to become juvenile sea urchins.6. Defense mechanisms: Besides their spines, some sea urchins have venomous pedicellariae—small pincer-like structures on their body surface that can inject toxins into potential threats.7. Longevity: Depending on the species, sea urchins can live for several years, with some species reaching lifespans of up to 30 years or more.8. Importance in ecosystems: Sea urchins play a crucial role in marine ecosystems by controlling algal populations through grazing. However, overpopulation of sea urchins can lead to ecosystem imbalances, such as the destruction of kelp forests in some regions.9. Regeneration: Sea urchins have remarkable regenerative abilities, capable of regrowing lost spines, tube feet, and even parts of their internal organs.10. No Brain: #Urchins have no brains instead they have a decentralized nervous system called a nerve ring which surrounds their mouth. Their nervous system helps coordinate basic functions like movement, feeding, and response to stimu
Here are ten facts you may not have realized about this amazing species!!1. **Ancient Species:** They’ve been around for over 450 million years, predating dinosaurs.2. **Not Really Crabs:** Despite their name, they’re more closely related to spiders and scorpions than crabs.3. **Blue Blood:** Their blood is copper-based, giving it a blue color. It’s used in medical testing to detect bacteria.4. **Spawning Spectacle:** Every spring, they gather in large numbers on beaches to spawn, creating incredible spectacles.5. **Exoskeletons:** They have a hard exoskeleton that protects their soft bodies, which molt as they grow.6. **Multiple Eyes:** They have ten eyes, including compound and simple eyes, which help them detect movement and light.7. **Feeding Habits:** They primarily feed on mollusks, worms, and other small marine creatures by scavenging along the ocean floor.8. **Important Ecologically:** They play a crucial role in the ecosystem as prey for birds and fish and as scavengers.9. **Conservation Concerns:** Despite their resilience, they face threats from habitat loss, overharvesting for bait, and environmental pollution.10. **Living Fossils:** Often referred to as “living fossils” due to their unchanged appearance over millions of years.Video taken by valued team member Capt Colt #naplesfl#rosemurex#Sanddollar#Swflorida#Shellheaven #marcoislandfl #shellofaday #Shellheaven #seashells #Coolthings#shelltour #shelling #shellingtrip #Reelkindfishingandtours#Marcoislandshelling#Visitflorida#Shellyeah#beachcombing#10000islands#albinoshells#whelks
Important: The Gaudy Nautica, now these are quite common to find year round. I often have customers asking when is the “SEASON” for a certain type of shell, for instance a Junonia. All of the shells out in the Ten Thousand Islands are pretty commonly found year round EXCEPT for the JUNONIA. This particular shell is mostly found in winter months because of the stronger currents/winds. In Florida’s, “summer months” they are really almost never found unless there has been a tropical storm or hurricane and this is because they are a very deep water shell and need those very strong currents to wash then ashore. And ask yourself why are only 1 or 2 companies posting Junonia “finds” on a regular basis year round? All of the shell companies in our area shell the same beaches, there are no secret spots, the only difference is the sheller. If it’s not the season or right conditions, they just AREN’T found naturally.**#educateyourself #sheller #shells #shelling #florida #honest #seashells #swfl #beaches #ocean #gulfofmexico #junonia #shelltour #shellingtours #lovetheoutdoors #beachfinds #beachcombing #summerfun #summer #summervacation #summerstormVideo taken by Team Member Capt Colt

Finding one of these Albino Florida Fighting conchs with a purple hue is one of my dreams. They are extremely rare but we are blessed here in the 10,000 Islands to find them occasionally. Many times it’s hard to tell the difference between a sunbleached shell and a true albino shell. The albino shell will have a shiny exterior and deep inside the shell. There will be no sign of Color. If the shell were simply sunbleached you could look deep inside the shell and see it’s former coloring.#shell #albino #beachscene #tropicalisland #vacation #beachcombing #seashells #natureVideo taken by Team Member Capt Colt
