South High was one of the schools that helped WCPS pioneer educational television in the classroom. When the school opened in September of 1956, it was one of the first schools in the county equipped with state of the art technology such as a full closed circuit television network. Parts of the closed circuit system still remain in the building today including coax plugs in most classrooms. You can read student reports and opinions on educational television in early editions of the South Wind newspaper and the yearbook.

📺 Did you know? Washington County Public Schools have been pioneers in using television as part of their instructional program since 1956! Over the years, educational TV has become a valuable tool, helping to strengthen lessons, broaden student opportunities, and improve achievement across various subjects, from math to history. This innovation not only enhanced learning but also increased parental involvement and encouraged teamwork among school staff.

Tomorrow is the first day of the 2024-2025 school year! Here are a few things to help you prepare this evening.

- Review the smore from WCPS regarding cell phone policies across the county. https://secure.smore.com/n/trmyv-focus-now-phones-later?ref=email&fbclid=IwY2xjawE4KUtleHRuA2FlbQIxMQABHaLJ6VDm5kMnvyJQoXyqy6SCM38YEMPO3iWhfY4pCE1pWULN9nWQBW_pzA_aem_PkenU750RthJk2qY62OLQw

- Review the smore from South High. https://secure.smore.com/n/p6d95x

- Find your bus stop, the bus number, and estimated pick up and drop off times. https://wcpsmd.com/transportation/bus-routes

Finally, a reminder about our traffic patterns on campus during peak traffic times (morning arrival and afternoon dismissal).

Students arriving or being picked up by car should go to the Maryland Avenue side of the school. The only traffic allowed on the South Potomac Street side of the building should be buses, staff and student drivers.

If you arrive after the 8:35 bell, enter through the visitors entrance on the South Potomac Street side and get a tardy pass.

Doors open at 8:15, students are released to first period at 8:25. Dismissal is at 3:30pm.

Students will receive their assigned Chromebook and a charger upon arrival to first period or during the first class they have in the day if they have a reduced schedule. In the event your student's Chromebook has not been delivered to their first period teacher yet, please be patient as our IT staff works to finish distributing devices. They have been working hard to prepare over 1,500 devices (not counting staff devices) and deliver them to the correct classrooms.

Be sure to get involved with sports teams, clubs and other organizations during your time at South High! There is something for everyone at the school!

Although it’s not a piece of the South Hagerstown school archive like we usually share, we came across a really cool historical artifact on display today while visiting North Hagerstown. They have a piece of the Berlin Wall on display in a case just outside the auditorium.

We love history, so seeing this and the other school artifacts they have on display around it was great!
