๐๐ The Kentucky Department of Tourism recently released the economic impact numbers for the state and individual counties in Kentucky for 2023 and Harlan County had a banner year!
Harlan County has:
โถ๏ธ304 jobs associated with tourism;
โถ๏ธ$6.1 million in labor income;
โถ๏ธ$3 million in state and local taxes;
โถ๏ธ$38.4 million in tourist spending;
Harlan County is also the 5th HIGHEST GROSSING in TOURIST SPENDING in our 18 county region!
This huge accomplishment could not be possible without all of the folks working hard every day to ensure that our county is welcoming, fun, and a destination for visitors. This includes everyone from the City of Harlan Tourist and Convention Commission, the City of Cumberland Tourist and Convention Commission, the City of Evarts Tourist and Convention Commission, and the Harlan County Tourist and Convention Commission. This accomplishment is also in part of the unifying force of our attractions such as the Black Mountain Off-Road Adventure Area, Black Mountain Thunder Zip Line, Portal 31, Kingdom Come State Park, Pine Mountain Settlement School, Dragon Slayer Hwy 160, Backroads of Appalachia, Camp Blanton, Martins Fork Lake, Kentucky Coal Museum, English Creek Stables, the Harlan Center, Harlan Country Club, Sleepy Hollow Golf Course, and many others we have surely forgotten. We also have to include all of our lodging partners in this accomplishment which includes the Quality Inn, the Rodeway Inn, Benham Schoolhouse Inn, Harlan Campground - Putney Trailhead, The Little Inn of Harlan, Pine Mountain Settlement School, and others! We also have to acknowledge all of businesses and restaurants that serve our tourists such as Harlan County Beer Company, Sassy TRASH LLC, Rail House Grill, Rax Restaurant Harlan, Ky, Sports Cafe & Catering, Luigiโs - Cumberland, KY, Suzy Qโs Pizzeria & Cafe, Hill & Holler, Raven Rock Coffee, Cafe, & Curiosities, Moonbow Tipple Cafรฉ & Books, Sonwood's, BelindaBelles & Henson Florist, Village Center Mall, PB&J Monogramming, Rhonda's Merle Norman, Mountain Merch, My Sister's Closet, Southern Ruckus, The Hungry Goats Good food and Catering restaurant, Dairy Hut, The Portal, and so many more that we KNOW we cannot list all in this post. We also want to recognize all of the folks who organize our events that take place in Harlan County as well. From the Poke Sallet Festival, The Festival of the Mountain Masters, 4th Fest, PossumFest, Dog Days of Kentucky, Kingdom Come Swappin' Meetin', events at the Off Road Park, golf tournaments, and so many others - you're working hard to bring folks into our community! Of course, the support of our cities, elected officials, and councils are all instrumental in tourism being an incredible economic engine in Harlan County!
Let's continue to work together and continue to foster tourism as an economic engine for Harlan County! Again, no businesses or attractions were meant to be left out on purpose. We realize that every partner we have is instrumental in making our community the vibrant destination that it is.
