Back in the late 60s a young artist named Lance Bowen (pictured on the left) was on staff at the Hollywood Free Paper and was also the head designer for The Salt Company ... a Christian coffee house.

While Lance was involved in the Jr. High Ministry at Hollywood Presbyterian Church, he would arrive at the church in his convertible VW Bug and stick his hand up in the air and give the peace sign to the Jr. High minister, Bill Winterhome. One day Bill told Lance, "NO, NOT TWO WAYS...ONE WAY!" This sparked the idea in Lance's head to design a graphic to represent the concept.

At the same time, Harvard recently had a shutdown strike and they used a red clenched fist in the air as their symbol with the word "STRIKE" at an angle below it.

This image inspired Lance to design the famous "ONE WAY" design with a hand pointing up to Heaven and a small cross by the finger. Lance screen printed the symbol on posters and made them available for purchase at the Salt Company Coffee House for a dollar a piece.

One day, Dave Anderson who had a newspaper called "Lutheran Youth Alive" came to the Salt Company and asked if he could put the symbol on the back of his newspaper. The paper ended up going to over 100,000 different churches around the world and the design became one of the most recognizable symbols of the Jesus Movement.

Lance now lives in Hawaii and serves on staff at Harvest at Kumulani Chapel. ☝️
